From the beginning of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea to the Battle of Chosin Lake, "Blood Battle at Chosin Lake" has both a grand narrative and a microscopic interpretation, restoring the real war, politics and human nature.
The author's team lasted more than two years, visiting 28 volunteer veterans living across the country, and also interviewing command organs at all levels and researchers in military science who participated in the war. Most of them were the parties of the 20th, 26th, and 27th Armies of the Ninth Corps of the Volunteer Army who participated in the Battle of Chosin Lake, including combat heroes and commanders in the line of fire, as well as senior commanders and staff officers involved in strategic decision-making. They are the only remaining witnesses of history, telling rich battlefield details. Most of these veterans have now passed away, which makes their oral history particularly valuable.
For example, Jiang Qingyun, one of the prototypes of the seven company commanders, recalled in the book the process of performing the task of blowing up the Bridge of Watergate:
Jiang Qingyun was the commander of the Seventh Company of the Third Battalion of the 240th Regiment of the 80th Division of the 27th Army, and the 7th Company was a commando detachment responsible for the task of blowing up bridges organized by the Volunteer Army. Immediately after receiving the mission, he mobilized two platoons to form a death squad and launched the third operation to destroy the Watergate Bridge. Jiang Qingyun personally led an infantry platoon of more than 20 people to the front, when they were discovered by the US army, they were less than 100 meters away from the Watergate Bridge, the HEAVY machine gun of the US army only hit a shuttle, it knocked down 7 people, at that time 3 people were sacrificed, 4 people were wounded, and the rest of the personnel under the leadership of Jiang Qingyun continued to advance towards the bridge without hesitation, and they were close to the Watergate Bridge less than forty or fifty meters.
Jiang Qingyun's death squad launched an attack. They braved rain-like bullets and wore cotton jackets to make the white lining a protective color in the snow, hiding from the enemy through the dark night.
Under the bridge head, there is a small railway where ordinary people usually transport wood, and there are two small ditches on the side of the railway, and under the small ditch is the Chosin Lake Highway. Jiang Qingyun's death squad was hidden on the edge of the small railway.
Jiang Qingyun led the daredevils along the small ditch to alternately cover the way forward. They found that the U.S. army had occupied an abandoned pier at the head of the railway bridge, but there were not many people, and there was a shooting dead end, and the bullets were not easy to hit them.
Jiang Qingyun swung the carbine gun, and all the daredevils jumped onto the bridge and engaged the US short soldiers. Jiang Qingyun was slightly wounded in the battle, and two bullets hit him in the arm, but he still insisted on commanding the battle. Everyone shouted and rushed toward the American troops, most of the American troops guarding the bridge were annihilated, and those who escaped were intercepted and annihilated by the troops of the Twentieth Army. By the evening of December 6, Jiang Qingyun's death squads had rushed through the US positions three times and blown up the newly erected bridge and pedestal with their flesh and blood.
