At the 1945 ceremony of Japan's surrender, he accepted the surrender as a representative of China. This can be said to be the supreme glory. If it were not for the highest-ranking generals who contributed the most and fought the most wars, they would not be entitled to such a special honor, and some people in the United States at that time even told him to let him become president and take Chiang Kai-shek's place, but he did not do so.
He Yingqin and Chiang Kai-shek have known each other for a long time, and they have studied in Japan together, and their political positions are the same. In the early days of the founding of the Whampoa Military Academy, Chiang Kai-shek was the principal at that time, and He Yingqin was the chief instructor. Later, after the founding of the People's Republic of China, he went to Taiwan together. In Taiwan, He Yingqin thought that he would hold an important position, but Chiang Kai-shek only arranged vacant posts, so he left the center of power. But He Yingqin did not complain or be depressed. The rest of his life contributed a lot to Taiwan's national cultural undertakings.
He Yingqin's wife, Wang Wenxiang, married him when she was 19 years old. But they have been married for so long but have not had children, and later went to the hospital for examination to find that Wang Wenxiang could not have children. In the concept of the time, passing on the generations was a big thing. Wang Wenxiang also felt very guilty about his inability to have children. This guilt buried in his heart was a knot in his heart, and he had always felt that he was sorry for He Yingqin.
Later, Wang Wenxiang directly proposed to He Yingqin that he should remarry his wife, but after He Yingqin heard this sentence, he was furious with his usual gentleness to his wife and resolutely did not agree to remarry. In fact, I have to lament that many high-ranking officials in the Kuomintang are very praiseworthy in their personality. He Yingqin, as the most senior general, was able to love his wife for ten years, and he was more noble than some literati during the Republic of China period. Later, He Yingqin's younger brother took the initiative and passed on his daughter to his brother, and the matter was resolved. Therefore, He Yingqin had only one daughter in his life.
Wang Wenxiang's health had been bad, because she had no fertility, she became very depressed, and by 1952 she was diagnosed with breast cancer. He Yingqin was very fond of his wife, and his heart was also very uncomfortable watching her being tossed by the disease. He has always been with his wife, never abandoned her, and every year he goes to Japan for treatment with her. In ordinary times, she is more carefully taken care of, and she is brought tea and poured water every day, and never complains.
At that time, the media called him "China's first best husband", and even foreign media rushed to interview him and praise his greatness. Until 1978, Wang Wenxiang died after being tossed by illness for 26 years. He Yingqin, who was already 88 years old, cried darkly after the death of his wife, and no one could persuade him or comfort him. Such an open-minded and meritorious general has become so lonely.
In fact, when we evaluate a big person, we often have great achievements in him, but sometimes some small things in life can better reflect the greatness of this person. Although He Yingqin has left a lot of bad impressions politically and made people comment badly, he deserves our respect in terms of personal character.
