In feudal society, the mainland had little contact with the outside world, and the policy of closing the country to the outside world made the people enjoy peace, but it also led to the mainland eventually being abandoned by the world trend.
Historically, the first foreigners to be allowed to stay on the mainland were Portuguese, who were granted temporary residency in Macau during the Ming Dynasty. In the middle of the Ming Dynasty, the gold and silk of the Central Plains made the Portuguese very hungry, so they wanted to find a stronghold to transport these rare and exotic goods to their own countries, in fact, to seize the Ming Dynasty's overseas trade rights. But the Ming Dynasty, the toughest of the dynasties, never agreed, so they paid bribes to local officials, and after several years of hard-hitting, they finally obtained the right of abode in Macau, but at that time, they were only allowed to live in a certain area at the southern tip of Macau.
For this reason, Macau has always been regarded as a model of cultural exchange between China and the West, and the idea of learning the West in the late Ming and early Qing dynasties was also first popular here. If the name Macau goes back to its roots, it was still given by the Portuguese. At that time, they landed here from Mazu Pavilion and asked the locals what place it was, and the locals casually said, Ma Ge. Later, the Portuguese have been synonymous with this and translated it in Portuguese to become Macau.
Later, the Central Plains changed greatly, Chongzhen committed suicide, Li Zicheng became emperor, Zhang Xianzhong rebelled in the south, and the Qing army in the north attacked. The competition between the various forces lasted for more than ten years, and finally let the Qing army win the world. After the Great Qing entered the customs, it continued to conquer various places and occupied most of the land, but only the Qing army in Macau did not move.
As for the reasons, there is no record in the history books, but experts analyzed that at that time, the Qing army entered the customs, the domestic anti-Qing resistance and Qing prestige were great, and the ethnic contradictions were serious, and there was no time to take care of the small place of Macao. The successive emperors who succeeded to the throne did not care about this, believing that it was just a group of merchants living together, and there is also a saying that when the Portuguese paid bribes to the Qing, the Qing Dynasty turned a blind eye.
In fact, when the Portuguese first came here, they were still engaged in some unrelated business activities, but with the changes in the domestic situation in Portugal, their domestic colonists began to land here, and gradually the Portuguese became a privileged class here, and the local people were dissatisfied with it. But now, Macao has returned to the embrace of the motherland, because of historical reasons, the cultural diversity here, is still one of the more economically developed regions.
