In the original script of "My Altay", "Sulitan", a character who combines the spirit of a hunter and the patriarchal style, has a common name for ethnic Kazakhs - Selik, which means "partner". Later, at Alimujiang's suggestion, the character's name was eventually changed to "Sulitan", which means "commander-in-chief" and "general" in Kazakh. In his opinion, this is more in line with the image positioning of this father: a general will not only not take off his saber, but will also hold the last position. Of course, the "general" also had to accept that he might be the last person left on this "position".

Returning to Altay after 20 years, Alimujiang Tursbaik's feelings are: there have been great changes.

In 2004, 22-year-old Alimujiang starred in his first movie "Beautiful Home". At that time, they were filming in Altay's Baihaba Village, Naren Grassland and many areas of Burjin County, which almost coincided with his participation in the filming of "My Altay". But 20 years later, Altay is still amazed by the changes that have become new ones, and the roads have become wider and smoother.

In Alimujiang's self-evaluation, he is a bit old-fashioned, just like the herdsman Sulitan he played in "My Altay", he has his own adherence to some Kazakh traditions. He has to admit the benefits of the new changes: the rise of tourism and commercialization in Xinjiang in recent years have indeed improved the lives of local people. But at the same time, he also felt more or less "indescribable, as if something was different" in his heart.

Kazakh "Wenqing" who fled the steppe

"Half of the property of the Kazakhs belongs to the guests."

The attitude of the local traditional herdsmen towards business and money transactions is already reflected in the drama "My Altay": Zhang Fengxia, the commissary owner played by Ma Yili, wants to buy a sheep and bargains with the herders until dark, but to no avail. After the herdsmen's kindness, Zhang Fengxia decided to stay overnight. Unexpectedly, the big fat sheep, which could only make them discuss for a day, were slaughtered by the enthusiastic herdsmen and served as dinner.

In Alimujiang's childhood memories, there is also a boss like Zhang Fengxia with a fiery temperament. At that time, he often went to the neighbor's commissary to buy groceries, knocked on people's windows in the middle of the night, and the boss sometimes complained impatiently. But after all, they are all neighbors, and after getting along for a long time, sometimes they have no money, and the other party is like Zhang Fengxia, asking them to take credit.

However, unlike the Kazakh youth in "My Altay", Alimujan himself does not have much experience with nomadism and migration. His father was a teacher who attached great importance to the education of his children, "There are six children in the family, all of whom are college students, and my parents have always felt that even if we borrow money, we have to pay for our education." Only during the holidays, the children go to the mountain villages to help the elders of the family graze and mow the grass.

In his memory, the life of a Kazakh could not be separated from music. He still remembers that there used to be a black dombra hanging on the wall of his home, but neither his parents nor his siblings could play it. Sometimes uncles bring their friends to visit, and only when the mood is high, they take off their instruments to play, sing, sing and dance.

As a teenager, Alimujiang attended a local Chinese language school and had a great curiosity about the outside world. In the summer vacation when he was fifteen or sixteen years old, he learned to play Dongbula with a college student in the village, and since then he has officially embarked on the road of "literary youth". After graduating from the Ili Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture School of Culture and Art, he chose to stay in school and become a teacher like his father. But before that, he had never had any acting training. Recalling that opportunity to change the trajectory of his life, Alimujiang believes that it was "due to fate".

He remembers that the day the studio came to the school to audition for actors was a weekend. According to the original plan, he was supposed to leave school on Friday afternoon and take the bus to Karamay to meet with friends, but he did not make the trip after a quarrel with his friends before leaving. That afternoon, because he was not feeling well, he repeatedly ran out of his room to go to the bathroom, only to suddenly find that the school was unusually quiet. He walked around the school for a long time before he saw two or three students walking in groups.

"I asked them, 'Why is there no one, is there a school meeting?' They just told me that there were actors in it. Alimujiang learned that at that time, people from Tianshan Film Studio came to the school to select actors, and the requirements were quite tricky: to be a young man of the Kazakh nationality with a good image, not only to be able to play Dongbula, but also to be good enough in Chinese.

Coincidentally, these requirements almost all correspond to Alimujiang, and even the leaders who passed by encouraged him to try. After many auditions, after repeatedly wandering between disappointment and hope, Alimujiang was finally set to play the actor "Amantai" in the movie "Beautiful Homeland".

After joining the group, he learned from the assistant director: At that time, the crew had selected actors in Yili, Tacheng and many other regions, and interviewed more than 600 young Kazakh men before and after, including many better actors. "They told me, 'There are more people who are more capable than you.'" However, because the director had worked in the art (industry) and thought I was better looking and more beautiful on camera, he chose me. ”

The idol goes to sea, and the "general" bows his head

At that time, it was not a good thing to be called an "idol faction".

The assistant director's words left a thorn in Alimujiang's heart. To prove himself, his performance in "Beautiful Home" was extraordinarily hard. At the end of the film, the male protagonist Amante cries uncontrollably in the face of his father's death. During the filming, Alimujiang's performance successfully touched everyone present. "After that scene, we celebrated the birthday of another actor together, and the assistant director came with a bottle of wine and said, 'Come, come, I apologize to you for what I said before.'"

In "Beautiful Homeland", Alimujiang plays the Kazakh youth "Amantai", who walks out of the grassland regardless of traditional customs for the sake of his beloved girl next door, Mayila. But at the end of the story, he finds himself unable to say goodbye to the grassland.

And this seems to constitute the story of the first half of Alimujiang's life.

At the moment when Alimujiang decided to resign from school and become a professional actor, he was destined to face a storm from home. Even for his parents, who were relatively open-minded and loved literature, Alimujiang's choice could still be called "deviant". Like most parents, they don't think being an actor is stable enough. Compared with the "iron rice bowl" of school teachers, as an actor, what you eat is the precarious "youth rice". My father, who has been working in education all his life, couldn't accept it - "He said to me angrily: 'How good do you think being an actor?'" It's just that the screenwriter has written the words, and you just read them. ’”

His father's words still impress him to this day. As a "son of the steppe" who once took the initiative to leave the grassland and embrace the movie screen, he understands very well the desire of Batai to get rid of the nomadic life and go to the new world in "My Altay". At the end of the episode, Sulitan and Ba Tai reach a reconciliation, and the originally stubborn father finally decides not to interfere in his son's life, "At that time, what I said to Ba Tai, I feel that my father (wanted) to say to me."

The 42-year-old Alimujiang is now the father of two children, but the father who once lost his temper with him has passed away. The reconciliation between Su Litan and Ba Tai did not take place between Alimujiang and his father. In his opinion, his father's anger may also be a show of weakness, just like Su Litan's confession to his son in the play, "The life I like is disappearing in the same way." He just had to accept the lifestyle his son had chosen, but this "had to" always needed strong emotional support.

Walk between the screen and the classroom

For Alimujiang, there is often this subtle contradiction in himself: modesty and enthusiasm, a desire for freedom, and a commitment to tradition. He is proud of his experience as an actor, and during the filming, he once joked with Yu Shi: "If I were 20 years younger, the role of Ba Tai would definitely be mine." ”

It can be seen from the stills of that year that Alimujiang was handsome and high-spirited when he was young. Several of his starring works have not only been successful at home, but also widely acclaimed abroad.

In 2006, Alimujiang decided to receive systematic performance training. He wanted to go to a film school in China, but the tuition fees were still beyond his expectations, and in the end, he chose to study at the Zhurgenov State Academy of Arts in Kazakhstan for two years. Originally, it was to save some money, but unexpectedly, many people in the local area had seen his movies and recognized him, and even reporters came to interview him, which made him very proud.

In the interview, he also mentioned more than once that he would like to thank those who have pulled him on the road of acting. For example, Zhang Yigang and Ma Hesati, the old directors of Tianshan Film Studio; For example, director Gao Feng, who chose him as the leading actor against public opinion; For example, the cinematographer Murati, who helped him during the filming, and the executive directors Su Lei and Ju Laiti, who were also his first acting teachers; Wait a minute. Even after 20 years, he still remembers these names and solemnly expresses his gratitude to them.

Nowadays, searching for Alimujiang's works on Douban, in addition to "My Altay", the most recent work dates back to 2011. However, over the years, he has maintained producing 1-2 works a year, and each time he enters the group for two or three months, to try a different life.

When he is not acting, Alimujiang will choose to return to Yili and continue to teach local children to play Dongbula in the training class he held with his friends. This is the work he has long been accustomed to, and it is also a hobby that he has persisted in to this day, and it is a symbol of Kazakh tradition. He tried to adhere to the living traditions of the Kazakh people in a new way, maintaining his nomadic work habit of "living in pursuit of water and grass".

Scholar Liu Qing once said that leaving and returning are the eternal propositions of human beings. In Alimujiang's body, these two states are also alternating.

"A few days ago, I also told my friends that I want to return to the primitive life before, herd some sheep, and move all year round, although it is a little harder than now, but it doesn't seem to be so tired." But most of the time, when it comes to life in the city, he shows great enthusiasm.

Perhaps, for the characters in the play, Li Wenxiu, Ba Tai, Su Litan, or Alimujiang in reality, they are destined to swim between these two states and try to find a balance between them.
