Yu Chengwan, also known as Shi Jian, was born in 1902 in a small village of just over 100 families in Taishan, Guangdong Province. Since childhood, he has shown an extraordinary talent in reading and learning words.
With the support of his elders, he became the first student of the Whampoa Military Academy after more than ten years of hard study, and graduated from the Department of Political Science of National Sun Yat-sen University, and later entered the Army University for further study.
After graduating from the Whampoa Military Academy, Yu Chengwan chose a civilian party work and served as the director of the political department of the Admiralty. Due to his excellent performance and outstanding performance, Yu Chengwan was promoted one after another and became the party representative of the Ishii Arsenal.
After the outbreak of the all-out War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, he applied to join the army and shifted from civilian work in the rear to the frontal battlefield.
At the same time, the classmates who graduated from the Whampoa Military Academy at that time had already become division commanders, military commanders and other figures, leading the army to fight everywhere, while Yu Chengwan, who was "halfway out of the house", could only start from the identity of the instructor of the army, until the age of 32, and was also a regimental commander.
His path to promotion is far more difficult than others. Fortunately, during his studies at the Whampoa Military Academy, Yu Chengwan accompanied Sun Yat-sen on the Northern Expedition, and his command skills and military vision had already emerged.
Therefore, in many years of military training, he received the attention of the chairman of the committee and was promoted to the commander of the 57th Division of the 74th Army in 1940.
The 74th Army is the chairman's trump unit, and the two commanders, Yu Jishi and Wang Yaowu, are both students from the Whampoa Military Academy, and although they are superiors and subordinates, they all privately call Yu Chengwan an old senior.
Yu Chengwan did not live up to the expectations of the chairman of the committee, and in the Battle of Shanggao, he commanded the 57th Division to calmly respond to the battle, performed very well, and cooperated with the remaining divisions to annihilate more than 15,000 enemy troops, which was called "the most wonderful stop since the War of Resistance.". It was precisely because the 57th Division held up most of the strength of the enemy's 34th Division, which was conducive to the rest of the army to break through the enemy troops one by one, and under the wise command of Yu Chengwan, the 57th Division won the highest honorary title of the army - "Tiger Ben".
Stick to Changde, loyalty is doubted
Yu Chengwan's combat style was calm and strategic, and he befriended the military commander Wang Yaowu and won Wang Yaowu's trust. In 1943, in order to prepare for the Pacific War, the Battle of Western Hubei inevitably broke out, and the strategic position of Changde in the central and southern regions as the rear of the chairman of the committee was very important.
Changde has been known as the "throat of Qianchuan" and "the lips and teeth of Western Chu" since ancient times, and Wang Yaowu was well aware of its importance, so he sent the experienced Yu Chengwan to lead the 57th Division as a defender of the city and deployed in Changde.
"The city survives and exists, the city dies and dies", Yu Chengwan made a generous statement to the soldiers before the war. In November, the enemy's 11th Army of about 30,000 people pressed the border, and there was only one 57th Army of 8,000 people in Changde City, and the supply of weapons and ammunition was far inferior to that of the enemy troops.
Although the situation was critical, Yu Chengwan still stabilized his mentality, fortified step by step, and used the "defensive tactics" created by Stalin of the Soviet Union to defend Changde and resist the enemy troops with a large number of enemy troops.
The angry and corrupt enemy army was not willing to be fooled by the troops of less than 10,000 people, so they moved out the biological weapons they had developed, gassed the city, and prepared to force the defenders to leave the city and surrender.
However, the soldiers came to block, the water came to cover the ground, and Yu Chengwan collected the charcoal of the whole city, burned it at a high place, and used the smoke to resist the poisonous gas, once again repelling the enemy's offensive.
After round after round of attacks, the Tiger Army defending the city was seriously depleted, especially the frequent street battles, which damaged most of the strength of the Tiger Army, and the original 8,000 troops were less than a hundred people left, and it was difficult for Cheng to get in touch with the friendly forces of the 10th Army.
After sending the last telegram, Yu Chengwan, who was unable to support himself, broke through with the remaining 83 soldiers and sought reinforcements to rescue Changde. Finally, on December 8, Changde was recaptured.
At the celebration banquet, Wang Yaowu, Zhang Lingfu, Fu Yi, and others sat around a table one after another, praising him for living up to the prestige of the tiger and giving Yu Chengwan a toast to show respect.

As soon as this book was published in 1945, it received widespread attention from the society, and even a woman who was far away in Suzhou secretly promised Yu Chengwan after reading it, and under the introduction of the matchmaker, she came to Chongqing from far away and became the continuation of Yu Chengwan.
Yu Chengwan, who was on the side of the beauty, was tired of the war and only wanted to spend the rest of his life with his wife and children.
In 1950, after the founding of New China, Yu Chengwan settled in Hong Kong, used the money saved in the first half of his life to open a chicken farm, began a business life, because he was good at business, Yu Chengwan's business became more and more prosperous, and the accumulated wealth also attracted the attention of the underworld.
One night in August 1955, gangsters took advantage of the darkness to enter Yu Chengwan's mansion and kidnapped his wife and servants. Yu Chengwan had a hot temper and immediately drove home to fight with the gangsters, and was captured by the bandits.
The kidnapping alarmed the neighbors, and after rushing to the police, the robbers and the police who arrived were in a fight, and Yu Chengwan was shot several times and died on the spot.
Whether Yu Chengwan was injured by a stray bullet is still a mystery, the truth of his death was buried forever with the darkness of that night, and a generation of famous anti-war generals died in the firefights of the underworld, which is inevitable to be lamented.
