Sun Yuqing, also known as Sun Baoshan, was born in March 1909 to a poor peasant family in Huang'an County, Hubei Province. After the Jute Uprising in November 1927, Li Xiannian led his troops to attack Huang'ancheng, and it was at this time that Sun Yuqing joined the uprising troops, joined the Red Army in 1929, served as a battalion commander in 1931, and then promoted to the commander of the Thirty-second Regiment of the Red Eleventh Division, and in 1933, the Thirty-second Regiment was awarded the "One Victory over a Hundred" award banner for his outstanding combat achievements, and Sun Yuqing won the reputation of "General of War", and was later promoted to the commander of the Seventy-third Division, and later to the commander of the Thirty-first Army.
In several encirclements and suppressions, Sun Yuqing led his troops to fight bravely, repeatedly performed miraculous feats, and was awarded the banner of "Night Raid Changsheng Army".
In August 1935, he was transferred to the Red Ninth Army.
After the defeat of the Western Route Army in 1937, Sun Yuqing, Together with Wang Shusheng, Li Jukui, Fang Qiang, and other comrades, formed a small detachment and marched east along the Qilian Mountains, and soon this detachment was also scattered.
In March 1937, when Sun Yuqing was fighting the enemy in Sandaogou in Jiuquan Nanshan, Gansu, he was captured by the landlord militia and sent to the enemy's 298th Brigade.
