At 3 p.m., the enemy broke through the first defensive position north of the East and West Han Villages from the combined part of the New Fourth Brigade and the Teaching Brigade. As a result, the Teaching Brigade was forced to retreat to the second defensive positions of Shanliang Shandong and Xiyaotou to resist.
Eight companies and a platoon were ordered to cover the transfer of the whole battalion and blocked the enemy ten times that of us. When the main force of the whole battalion was transferred, the enemy pressed up from the west again.
Seeing that the enemy was only thirty or forty meters away from the position, platoon commander Song Zhongshu jumped out of the fortifications and shouted loudly: "Comrades, resolutely fight the enemy to the end!" He threw grenades in succession, knocking back the enemies who had climbed up.
In a puff of smoke, the entire platoon of fighters jumped out of the fortifications and rushed toward the enemy group with dangling bayonets, disrupting the enemy's structure at once, some of the enemy knelt down and surrendered, some turned around and ran, and fled in all directions.
At this moment, the battalion deputy of the enemy overseer team hiding behind a boulder fired several shots at Song Zhongshu in a row, and the bullet hit him in the head.
Song Zhongshu's sacrifice on the spot further aroused the anger of the soldiers, and everyone consciously insisted on fighting, fighting with the enemy to the death, and insisting on resisting until they followed the order of Commander Wang to retreat, and then they were transferred.
