Mind Games: Talk about "Who I Am"

Mental games

Let's start with a mental game:

Please take out a piece of paper and write five sentences on it in a row, "I am..."

Ask to start with the word "I am" and then complete the sentence. You don't have to think about it, think of what to write.

After writing, read the following article.

In my classes, I often play such a simple game with my audience. This game comes from Theston's personality test, the original test is to measure the completion of 20 "I am..." sentences, the purpose of which is to try to examine a person's personality through a person's description of the self.

I use it in my classroom, often reducing it to 5 sentences for a more economical time, and I don't want to take a personality test, my more important purpose is to explore how people position themselves and what that positioning reflects.

Let's take "primary and secondary school teachers" as an example:

In a classroom for primary and secondary school teachers, when a teacher answers this question, the first sentence that often comes to mind is, "I am a male (female) teacher." When explaining this sentence, I often say, "Oh, first of all, in your life, work comes first, occupies a more important position, because you first position yourself with your professional identity of 'being a teacher'." Next, I'll make a little joke, "Also, explain that your sexual orientation is correct, say your male (female) identity, and you should not have homosexual tendencies." "Although I said it well, it was a bit boring to explain, and everyone would laugh at it."

After the first "I am..." sentence is completed, the content is varied:

Some will say, "I'm a guy with long hair, I'm a guy with glasses."

Then explain, "You use your external image to position yourself, indicating that you are a person who pays attention to your body image, in other words, you are a person who loves beauty."

Some will say, "I'm a happy bird, I'm a ray of sunshine."

Then explain, "You use something unrealistic to position yourself, indicating that you are a romantic and warm person, but such a statement can not be too much, too much shows that you are an unrealistic person."

Some people will say, "I'm a person who loves to read, I'm a person who loves to shop."

Then explain, "You use hobbies to position yourself in your own positioning, indicating that your amateur life is not lonely, and your hobbies also occupy an important position in your life." ”

The teachers made up sentences casually, and I explained them half professionally and half empirically, and the class was a bit lively.

Of course, the reality reflected by adding "I am..." to a complete sentence is by no means as simple as it is to operate. Five simple sentences, but it reflects why you became yourself. The sentences you complete will subconsciously reveal your own positioning, the focus of your life.

From this point of view, although some teachers' sentences are not very special, there are two types of people's answers that are worrying.

(1) The first category is that when some teachers create sentences, all five sentences use their own occupation to position themselves, which are related to their work:

I'm a teacher,

I'm a male teacher.

I'm a math teacher.

I'm a second-grade math teacher.

I am a ten-year-old teacher...

For such a teacher, the five sentences are related to his teaching profession, no doubt, he put his work first, it is worth affirming, but there is nothing else in his ego except work. Such a teacher's life is certainly single and lack of change, hard work and not soothed.

(2) There is also a category that relates all sentences to their social roles:

I am the teacher of the students,

I am the son of my parents;

I am the father of my daughter,

I'm a friend of friends...

A few simple sentences, using their own role to position themselves reflect the teacher's emphasis on his own social role, however, from another aspect, he is living for others, and the goal of his life is whether he can become a good teacher of others, a good son, a good father, a good friend, in his life, there is no longer himself, such a person, of course, will live very tired.

A simple game that reflects a different life. Are your five sentences done, who are you?
