The Power of Love - After watching "Thick Chocolate"

author:Retreat to the countryside

#Film & TV Miscellaneous # In a remote town in France, there are a group of residents with traditional concepts and regular life rules. They were devout Christians who, under the leadership of Count Reynolds, went to church on time for many years and listened to the priest's teachings: "If you see something that should not be seen, you must know how to look in other directions, if you repent, Christ will know where your sins are, and if your hopes are disappointed, you must know the truth that nothing can be demanded." They fasted for food and lust in Lent, engaged in self-reflection, repented repeatedly, believed in tranquility, and regarded indulgence and pleasure as a great injustice.

One day, however, when Vian Roche and her daughter Anouk appeared in a small town in a gray background dressed in red and opened a chocolate shop called "Walnut Candy on Earth" during the fasting Lenten, this natural calm was shattered. As people lined up to enter the church, Vianne guessed everyone's preferences in her elaborately decorated shop in her unique way, bringing them strange and novel ways of thinking, making them relax in curiosity and find their true selves. Among them are the landlord's old lady, Amandé, and Josephine, who is regarded by the townspeople as mentally abnormal and alone.

Amanda, a stubborn and casual old lady, after tasting the chocolate that Vivian had tailored for her with chili noodles, actually smiled approvingly at the intruder; Vian patiently listened to her good memories of her youth, and the contradiction between her and her daughter that "not without love, but not love", and cleverly arranged for her and her grandson to have a happy reunion in the chocolate shop. Amandai gradually changed her initial cynicism to sincere trust in Vivian, and even regarded Vian as a relative she could rely on. When Vian was ostracized by almost the entire town, led by the mayor, she asked Vian to throw a private party for her, just to prove to everyone: "We can always live well, can't we?"

As a mother, Amandai's inner helplessness became relaxed and relieved after she revealed herself in front of Vian. The daughter, Mrs. Caroline, is dignified and strong, and her heart is full of enthusiasm, but on the surface she is noble and self-respecting, her expression is always serious and dull, and the difference from her mother's personality makes them strange and distant from each other. But when she hurried to the party scene and saw her mother and son supporting each other and dancing cheerfully, at that moment, she completely understood her mother, who just wanted to live in her own way. Amandai, who is suffering from diabetes, looks at the portrait of her grandson while swallowing the delicious chocolate made by Vian, satisfying the intoxicated tears that flow down her cheeks, and the picture is perfect and decadent.

Josephine, another important character in the film, does not speak much, but enriches this character through the portrayal of her entire appearance and facial expressions. Josephine, when she first met Vian, had a shrinking low self-esteem and was filled with fear of her husband. As an abused woman with no social status and no one to rely on by her husband, Josephine, who does not love her husband Serge, although she knows that "it is not a big deal for her husband to tidy up the garden and not serve her husband's three meals a day", is deeply trapped in this clumsy and painful life, and does not know how to be good. Until one day, after being beaten again by her drunken husband, she finally plucked up the courage to run away from home and go to Vian's shop to make delicious chocolates with Vivian. Under Vian's enthusiastic call and full protection, she was reborn and dressed more and more beautifully. When Vivian was about to leave the town, she was able to gather a crowd of people and keep Vivian with their sincerity, both redeeming herself and achieving Vivian. From Josephine, we see the power of self-redemption, see the reversal of a desperate life, take a brave first step, and everyone can be a fearless god of war.

At the end of the film, the finale is a fairytale scene: the elderly Briero and the decades-old Lady Order are able to work together, Mrs. Caroline's temptation of Count Renault has finally come to fruition, and Vian, the "nurse girl in a group of patients", is also waiting for a lover of true love in the town where she has cried and laughed. At this point, the theme of "should not deny that we should resist everything or reject others, learn to create and tolerate, and human beings will eventually warm and love each other" naturally emerges.
