In May 1940, in order to better open up anti-Japanese base areas behind enemy lines in East China, support the New Fourth Army in combat, further expand the influence of the New Fourth Army and strengthen the prestige of the New Fourth Army, the headquarters of the Eighth Route Army successively transferred some troops from the field troops of the Eighth Route Army, south of the Yellow River, out of Jin-Cha-Ji, and advanced to the junction of the four provinces of Yulu, Suwan and Anhui.

[Founding Lieutenant General Kang Zhiqiang]
After the 344th Brigade of the Eighth Route Army received the order to go south, Kang Zhiqiang, then political commissar of the 344th Brigade, knew that from the Jin-Cha-Ji base area to the junction of the four provinces of Henan, Lu, Su, and Anhui, although the route was not very long. However, many places along the way had become occupied areas under the frenzied attack of the Japanese army, and it was still difficult to lead the troops across thousands of mountains and rivers to reach the prescribed areas.
Another place that worries Kang Zhiqiang is that many commanders and fighters of the 344th Brigade are members of the Eighth Route Army with enthusiasm and enthusiasm, and they have a heavy concept of hometown and are unwilling to leave their hometown to go to the south to participate in the anti-Japanese resistance.
However, the orders of the headquarters of the Eighth Route Army must be carried out, and there is nothing terrible about the commanders and fighters who have emotions and concerns; as long as they work in a law-by-law manner and set an example, they will be able to embark on a journey happily.
After a simple preparation, the 344th Brigade began to move south, and when the troops passed through the Tightly Sealed Jinpu Road of the Japanese Army, Kang Zhiqiang asked the commanders and fighters of the vanguard units to serve as reconnaissance officers and fighters must master the driving time and driving rules of the Japanese ironclad locomotives, so that the troops could quickly pass through and not be discovered by the steel monster of the Japanese army.
When the troops were about to cross the Jinpu Railway, Kang Zhiqiang personally led the troops to take up the task of guarding and blocking the rear, thus ensuring the safe passage of the 344th Brigade, the railway line that the Japanese army had sealed the most tightly, and building confidence for the commanders and fighters of the 344th Brigade to advance towards their destinations without hesitation.
Especially in the face of the Japanese puppet army chasing after and blocking, causing the troops to move slowly, and sometimes avoiding the frontal interception of the Japanese army, the commanders and fighters often could not eat a hot meal. In particular, the always tense state of marching combat has also made individual fighters start to complain.
In view of this situation, Kang Zhiqiang took the initiative to talk with these soldiers and warned the soldiers that the difficulties encountered by the Red Army during the Long March were many times more difficult than these, but no one retreated, as long as we had confidence and determination, we would certainly be able to reach our destination, and then we would not be so rushing and hardworking as this.
Kang Zhiqiang's words made the commanders and fighters feel much more cheerful in their hearts, and the morale of the troops was encouraged to be vigorous, and they understood that no matter where in China they were, they were all for a purpose, that is, they must drive out the barbaric Japanese invaders.
[Entering an ambush position]
When the 344th Brigade finally arrived at its destination after hardships, the morale of the troops was always high and they could be put into battle at any time, and seeing this, Kang Zhiqiang felt that the hard work of this road was worth it.
Whether Kang Zhiqiang belonged to the Eighth Route Army in the early stage of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, or crossed the Yellow River in the late period of the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, most of them came to the Huai River Valley as political commissars, which was an important leadership position, and had almost nothing to do with military command. However, Kang Zhiqiang came from Jinchaji to northern Jiangsu and eastern Anhui, and due to the frequent sweeping of Japanese puppet armies here, Kang Zhiqiang naturally stepped into command operations. The battle he fought to achieve the best combat results was the siege and reconquest of Yeyang Town's stronghold.
At that time, Kang Zhiqiang, who was already serving as the political commissar of the Third Sub-district of Huaibei of the New Fourth Army, received such an important piece of information. The Japanese troops stationed in Suicheng received an important message from the reports of the agents and traitors sent, saying that the New Fourth Army, which was active in the Huaibei area, was concentrating its main forces to fight north of Lingbi County.
This made the Japanese army think that they had an opportunity to take advantage of it, and suffered from their own lack of troops, so they had to escort a part of the puppet army to Yeyang Town to repair fortifications and establish a stronghold. It tried to rely on this to capture Gupi, drive out the New Fourth Army active in that area, and completely open up the passage between the Longhai Railway and the Haizheng Highway.
The Japanese puppet army occupied the town of Yeyang, and for the New Fourth Army, it was temporarily unable to divide its troops to recover this important town, considering that as long as it took the north of Lingbi County and concentrated on dealing with this puppet army, it was absolutely impossible to let the Japanese puppet army lay a wedge in the base area.
The opportunity finally came. Kang Zhiqiang first ordered the main forces of the Huaibei Third Military Subdistrict to do a good job of reconnaissance of the puppet army strongholds and fortifications in Yeyang Town, so as to provide reference for formulating operational arrangements.
From the intelligence returned from the reconnaissance, Kang Zhiqiang learned that most of the japanese troops in Yeyang Town were puppet troops, and only a small number of Japanese troops, but the Japanese puppet army built the strongholds and fortifications relatively firmly, and the New Fourth Army did not have the sharp weapons and mountain cannons used in the siege of the city, how to eliminate the Japanese puppet army in Yeyang Town, and remove a bone spur stuck in the throat of the base area, which became a top priority.
Kang Zhiqiang and the leaders of the military sub-district discussed for a long time and decided to adopt the method of siege. Although we could not directly attack the stronghold of Yeyang Town, it was also a good way for us to firmly hold on to the several exits of the stronghold and trap the Japanese puppet army inside.
The units participating in the battle of the Third Military Subdistrict of Huaibei began to enter the positions in accordance with the orders of the military sub-district, and from the siege that had just begun, the Japanese puppet army thought that it had prepared sufficient grain and grass, and was not afraid of the siege of the New Fourth Army at all, but on the contrary, they also ridiculed the New Fourth Army at the stronghold for having the courage to attack, and we had prepared enough grain and grass, but we were afraid that you cowards would soon retreat.

In the face of the arrogance of the Japanese puppet army, the troops surrounded for a day or two, which made many commanders and fighters impatient, and they asked for a strong attack, which made the commanders of the Third Military Division fall into contemplation. Just as they were thinking about whether to attack or continue the siege after all, suddenly a staff officer came back to report that a puppet army had left the stronghold to carry water from a well.
This seemingly ordinary news made Kang Zhiqiang's tight brows stretch out, because a better way to besiege the Japanese puppet army came.
He quickly issued an order to mobilize the people in the base areas to immediately send their own dead pigs, dogs, chickens, and ducks that had already given birth to maggots to the front line, and then poured all these things into the wells where the Japanese puppet army took water, to see if you could still have no water to drink in the stronghold, and how long you could hold out.
The next day, the puppet army that came to fetch water found that it was full of white maggots from the first bucket of water that came up, and the well water emitted a strong fishy smell, and the well water could not be drunk, there was no water to drink, which made the Japanese puppet army trapped in the strongholds and fortifications panic, and could only resist the cracked lips.
After a few more days, the animals that had completely decayed emitted a strong smell of corpses, which emitted a disgusting smell as the wind blew to their strongholds and positions, and because they had not drunk water for several days, the Japanese puppet army had almost lost its combat effectiveness.
Kang Zhiqiang saw from the telescope that the Japanese puppet army had been tortured and exhausted, and immediately issued an order to attack Yeyang Town on all fronts, and after the battle, killed more than 200 Japanese puppet troops, and even more so that those Japanese puppet troops who did not die could only obediently surrender, and no longer had the spirit to fight.
