From mid-August to November 2021, the Jinan Archaeological Research Institute conducted rescue archaeological excavations on the ancient tombs in Kou Town, Laiwu District, Jinan, cleaning up 29 tombs, and the most important discovery was to unearth more than 10 different patterned tiles and portrait bricks from the Wei and Jin dynasties at the end of the Han Dynasty. Tomb brick patterns include sun patterns, diamond patterns, Bo bureau patterns, etc., portrait bricks have carriage and horse travel maps, pavilion figures, astrological charts and so on. This excavation created several firsts, the number of patterned bricks found at one time was the first in the Jinan area, and the first time it was found that a variety of patterned brick masonry was used in a tomb, which was also rare in Shandong Province.
Among the excavated portrait tiles, there are also astrological charts, including the moon images composed of the seven stars of the Big Dipper and the jade rabbit and golden cicada, indicating that the stories and legends of the moon palace have formed a system during this period. A large number of car and horse travel portrait bricks appear densely, and they are also relatively rare in Shandong.
