According to survivors of the "mass grave", more than 100 of their miners were crammed into a dark earthen house, serving more than ten hours a day of hard labor and often starving. There were also many Japanese soldiers guarding outside the courtyard, and as soon as the time came, they escorted the miners down the well to mine coal, and if they found that they were sick and injured, and could no longer continue to dig, they were thrown into the "mass grave" and buried alive or burned to death.
"When I woke up, I realized that I had been thrown into a mass grave by the Japanese devils..." Qian Kuibao, an old miner who had survived by chance, said in tears.
In 1962, China established a memorial hall on the site of the "Mass Grave" of the Datong Coal Mine in Shanxi To commemorate the people who died tragically at the hands of the Japanese. Since its establishment, the "Mass Grave" Site Memorial Hall has received countless Chinese and foreign patrons and has become an important demonstration base for patriotic education.
