Although he returned to the throne, his heart was no longer there until the 18th year of Shunzhi, when he died in the Yangxin Temple.
There are also different accounts of his death in history, with some saying that he died because of smallpox. However, historians have found through some records that there are other possibilities for his death, and some people say that he was already a monk and did not return to the Forbidden City again, but this statement is incorrect. Another thing worth exploring is that after the death of Shunzhi, Dong E's sister Zhenfei went with him to be martyred for the Emperor of the Qing Dynasty, and some people said that her death was completely atonement for her sister Dong E's sins, and only when she went to the martyrdom could she eliminate the Ai XinJue Luo family and complain about them Dong E.
