What does the "S" in the Nikon Z lens model stand for? (Share my thoughts)

Under Nikon-related news, it is often seen that some netizens leave messages asking what the "S" in the lens model represents.

For the Nikon Z-mount micro-single lens, the "S" in the model means that this is an "S-Line" lens. The S-type lens adopts new design principles and quality control standards to provide good resolution, bokeh characteristics, point image reproduction, image quality with maximum aperture and uniform product quality.

All of the S-type lenses that have been released are coated with nanocrystalline coatings.

According to Nikon's official notes: "S" stands for "Superior," "Special," "Sophisticated," and more.

As of January 2022, a total of 17 S-type lenses have been officially released or exposed (including the Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S and Z 800mm f6.3 VR S).

It should be noted that Nikon's "S" is a picture quality standard, which is not much the same as Canon's use of "L" and red circles, and Sony's use of G and GM to distinguish product grades. The same is the S-type lens, the product configuration is obviously different (for example, some lenses have LCD screens, independent control rings, and some do not). Here is also my opinion: Nikon Z mount micro single lens currently does not have a clear, unified high-end product logo (no LCD screen with gold circle, no gold circle with LCD screen).

After sorting out the characteristics of the Nikon S-type lens, 3 "Hua points" were found:

- Only Z 24-70mm f/2.8 S rear lenses have a fluorine coating,

- Z 50mm f/1.2 S front lens without fluorine coating,

- The Z 24-120mm f/4 S and other "high-end lenses" are only 1 LCD screen away (there is a reserved place on the sensor).
