"It's been a very tough year for our team." Stephan Wollenstein, head of China at the German automaker, said.

Wollenstein added that supply chain constraints, including the global chip shortage, affected production and were a factor that caused Volkswagen to fail to meet its ID sales targets.

The ID series, produced by Volkswagen in its joint ventures with SAIC and FAW, is the backbone of Volkswagen's ambitions in electric vehicles.

Among China's top ten electric car brands last year, the only foreign name was Tesla. According to consultancy Automobility, the list is dominated by Chinese automakers, including BYD, Wuling and NIO and Xiaopeng Motors. (Proofreading/Hidden Drei)
