Samsung Electronics' fourth-quarter operating profit was KRW 13.8 trillion, up 52.49% year-on-year.

Jiwei Network News On January 7, Samsung Electronics announced its preliminary financial report for the fourth quarter. According to the financial report, Samsung Electronics' operating profit in the fourth quarter was 13.8 trillion won (about 73.416 billion yuan); sales in the fourth quarter were 76 trillion won (about 404.32 billion yuan). Previously, the market estimated Samsung Electronics' operating profit and sales in the fourth quarter to be 15.21 trillion won and 75.11 trillion won respectively.

Samsung said revenue in the fourth quarter is expected to be 76.00 trillion won, up 23.48% from 61.55 trillion won in the same period last year and up 2.73% from 73.98 trillion won in the third quarter; Operating profit is expected to be KRW 13.8 trillion, up 52.49% from KRW 9.05 trillion in the year-ago quarter and down 12.77% from KRW 15.82 trillion in the third quarter.

Some analysts believe that Samsung's operating profit in the fourth quarter rose mainly due to the strong demand for server memory chips and the improvement of the profit margin of the chip foundry business; lower than the market expectations, mainly due to employee bonuses, marketing costs of the mobile phone business, and the rising cost of new display panels.

The analyst also said that although the price of memory chips fell in the quarter, strong demand from server customers boosted quarterly shipments of Samsung DRAM chips and NAND flash memory chips from a quarter. DRAM chips are widely used in data centers, while NAND chips are mainly used for data storage in digital devices. (Proofreading | new)
