First, the high stress when the earthquake occurs, which may cause the peroxy bond in rocks such as dolomite or rhyolite to break, form oxygen anions, move upward through rock crevices, and once they reach the atmosphere, they will ionize the air and form a luminous plasma. These studies also show that the perspective of a fault is related to the generation of seismic light, and near-vertical faults in rift valley environments have the highest probability of seismic light occurrence.
Another explanation is that rocks containing quartz, such as granite, cause sparks and gas ionization due to piezoelectric effects during tectonic motion, resulting in seismic light.
