On January 7th, the Zhejiang Art Museum ushered in the first blockbuster exhibition of the New Year, "Quiet Gaze: Italian Contemporary Sculpture Art Exhibition".
The works exhibited are all from Italy, and they are new friends we are familiar with.
They do not speak, but quietly bear the gaze of the passing audience, and then quietly look back, narrating their stories between comings and goings, looking for a stranger in a foreign land.
"Cross the ocean to see you"
Why are they "new friends we know"?
I say "familiar" because we have long been in contact with Italian contemporary sculpture art.
In 2018, "Silent Emotions: Bruno Valport's Works Exhibition" was exhibited at the Zhejiang Art Museum, which caused a strong response. The "Silent Gaze" exhibition is exactly the singing and harmony of the "Silent Emotions" exhibition. And this time, Bruno Valporte was also one of the artists exhibiting.

More importantly, the friendship between China and Italy has reached more than half a century, and they are familiar old friends.
2020 marks the 50th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Italy, and the 2020 China-Italy Year of Culture and Tourism is the first large-scale event held with the theme of "cultural and tourism integration" in the history of Sino-Italian friendly exchanges.
However, due to the impact of the new crown pneumonia epidemic, the related activities and projects have been suspended. Until 2022, the Year of Culture and Tourism will be restarted.
In 2019, the Zhejiang Art Museum's "Talk on Paper" tour exhibition was exhibited at the National Archaeological Museum of Naples and received widespread attention.
The eight contemporary Italian sculptors present at the exhibition include Aron Demetz, Bruno Walpoth, Gehard Demetz, Massimiliano Pelletti, Walter Moroder, Peter Demetz, Hermann Joseph Demetz, and Herman Joseph Berger. Herman Josef Runggaldier and Willy Verginer both have greater international influences.
As Mr. Darrenli, Director of the Cultural Department of the Italian Consulate General in Shanghai, said, the friendship between the two countries has a long history and has always maintained a close exchange relationship, the understanding between the two sides is deepening, and the exchange of works of art is becoming more and more frequent. As early as the third century BC, the Silk Road connected the East and the West.
"The holding of this exhibition also coincides with an important milestone in the development of China-Italy relations: the two governments have agreed to celebrate the Sino-Italian Year of Culture and Tourism through a series of rich cultural activities in 2022, commemorating more than half a century of friendly diplomatic relations between the two countries (1970-2020)."
This time, many "new friends" came. This is because many of the works exhibited are new works by artists, or even new works created by them for this exhibition.
They cross the ocean, carrying the philosophy of the artist, conveying greetings from the other side of the ocean.
After the first exhibition in Zhejiang, the "Quiet Gaze" art exhibition will also be transferred to the Wuhan Art Museum and the Guangdong Museum of Art.
The spirit of the interconnected craftsmanship is of the same origin as the sculpture
"I'm first and foremost a wood expert."
While chatting with Ying Jinfei, director of the Zhejiang Art Museum, Bruno Valport said such a sentence, which shocked and inspired Ying Jinfei.
We know that under normal circumstances, wood carving needs to be dried in advance, otherwise the work after carving is easy to deform and crack.
But bruno, the "wood expert," was able to make sculptures out of semi-dry wood because he was able to clearly know where wood would crack in the future and create accordingly.
Among the exhibits in this exhibition, there is such a work that was completed in this way. The face of the statue is intact, but we can see the cracks behind it, just right.

Ying Jinfei was shocked by such a craftsman spirit, and "re-examining the craftsman spirit" is also one of the original intentions of this exhibition. In this group of Italian sculptors, there is a general craftsmanship like Bruno.
It is through the contact and interaction with things in labor that the craftsman understands the texture of the material's existence with real physical perception, which is his way of proving his existence, conveying his emotions and connecting the vast world.
Perhaps the word "immersion" in Chinese is the best interpretation of this state of mind: the sound of sawdust crumbles during carving, the breath and light of space, the texture of the material and the touch of the skin...
This kind of craftsman spirit is in communication with the traditional Chinese craftsman spirit.

"Quiet Gaze: Italian Contemporary Sculpture Art Exhibition" also has high academic value, and the main academic topic of the exhibition is "Plastic Painting Homology".
This exhibition of sculptures from exotic places will naturally make people look back at the tradition of Chinese sculpture.
Since ancient times, China's sculpture modeling methods have continuously integrated foreign cultural elements, just as traditional Chinese calligraphy and painting are "calligraphy and painting homologous" relationship, and the process of internalizing the painting tradition of advocating linear aesthetics in sculpture expression is also long and thick.
In this exhibition, Italian artists cherish the exploration and excavation of the painterliness of sculpture works, and I believe that it will bring a lot of thinking and inspiration to scholars.

What is the Museum of The Air Museum?
Another feature of this exhibition is the new interactive area of the "Air Art Museum".
The Aerial Art Museum is not a physical art museum, but a public space for the audience to interact and create freely, which can take the audience to open all the perceptual channels and understand the exhibition in an immersive way.
The interactive area is located on the Skylight Promenade and is divided into three parts: multi-media practice, wood carving studio and sound post office:
Multi-media practice area
Tan Zidong, a teacher at the School of Art Management and Education of the China Academy of Art, led his students and cooperated with the Zhejiang Art Museum to create this multi-media practice area for the audience.
Visitors can DIY your own exclusive guidebook in the "Handbook Area"; they can also create aluminum wire paintings and aluminum silk soft sculptures in the "Creation Area" to copy a copy of your favorite exhibits with aluminum wire; and they can also interactively obtain exhibition comic bags in the "Take-out Zone".
Authoring area
Considering that the content of the exhibition may not be easy for small audiences to understand, this area has a special "audio-visual area" to display the works in the form of animations familiar to the young audience, supplemented by music that can express emotions as a special "guide".
The interactive area also magnifies the spatial works of participating artist Peter Demetz into a bizarre space where the audience can "walk in" into the artwork and solve the mystery of the work.

Wood carving studio
Wood is the most vital of common sculptural materials. The sculptor dialogues with wood through the process of carving, realizing the creative intention.
In this exhibition, most of the sculptures are wood carvings.
As a way of sculpture creation, wood carving is not only important for creative ideas and forms of expression, but also inseparable from the blessing of skilled production technology, tool control ability and working methods directly affect the appearance of the work.
This wood carving studio, created by the young artist Jing Keya, recreates the place where wood carving artists work, and can help the audience learn more about the art of wood carving.

Sound Post Office
The Air Art Museum and the Hangzhou Branch of China Post Group Co., Ltd. jointly launched the special program of "Sound Post Office, Voice for Love".
The audience can make an exclusive exhibition sonic postcard that conveys the voice of love to lovers, loved ones, deceased people and friends through digital technology.
Like these exhibits that cross the ocean to exchange, this love will also cross the distant mountains and seas, overcome the barrier of time and space, and fly to the lover.
