The short but rich military school life allowed Zhao Xizhang to learn a lot of things.
After graduating from the Baoding Military Academy, he was assigned to serve in the Jin Army, and since then he became a general of the Jin Sui Army, in the Yan Xishan Clique he successively served as a platoon leader, instructor and other positions, because of his outstanding performance in the Jin Sui Army, Fu Zuoyi favored him to take his position as chief of staff.
In the career of the Jin Sui Army, Zhao Xizhang's position was also constantly promoted, and he was approachable, kind to soldiers, very prestigious in the Jin Army, and also loved by soldiers. In September, Zhao Xizhang's troops successively fought against the enemy in northern Jin and Shanxi, and both won small victories, and then participated in the Battle of Pingxingguan under the command of Sun Chu of the 33rd Army.

In this battle, he repelled the enemy's attacks again and again, although the casualties on both sides were very large, but the Morale of the Jin army under the leadership of Zhao Xizhang was high, preferring to die rather than retreat, insisting on fighting to the end, and when this battle was over, Zhao Xizhang was promoted to major general brigade commander.
Unfortunately, in February 1938, in the Battle of the Yellow River, the Japanese army, under the cover of aircraft artillery, wanted to destroy the Jin army south of the Yellow River in one fell swoop, and it was in this battle that Zhao Xizhang was unfortunately shot and killed in a fierce battle with the enemy army, and his troops were also killed and killed on the battlefield.
