On January 5, Sony announced at CES 2022 (International Consumer Electronics Show 2022) that it will establish an operating company called Sony Mobility Inc. in early 2022 to officially explore the possibility of entering the electric vehicle market.

Sony said it will use AI and robotics to develop businesses including VISION-S, autonomous entertainment robot aibo and drone Airpeak.

VISION-S is the focus of sony's exhibition. Sony first released the VISION-S concept and demonstrated its prototype at CES 2020, and in December of the same year, it began a public road test in Europe to verify the safety of the image and sensing technology installed inside and outside the car and the user experience of the human-machine interface (HMI) system, and began to conduct 5G environmental driving tests in April 2021.

The prototype on CES 2022 is its new seven-seat SUV (VISION-S 02), which has now begun public road testing.

Compared with the previously released prototype (VISION-S 01), the model is also equipped with an electric vehicle on-board cloud platform, and its vehicle settings, key locks and user settings can be synchronized by connecting the vehicle to the cloud through mobile communication technology, in addition, it also has low latency, large capacity and high-speed 5G communication technology.

In terms of sony's good entertainment functions, VISION-S will provide car owners with three-dimensional spatial sound field seat speakers, as well as 360 immersive sound compatible streaming services, to provide a high-quality video experience, VISION-S will also include a fully integrated digital video service function "Bravia CORE for VISION-S".

The car game feature is also one of its highlights. Owners can play PlayStation games on demand by remotely connecting to a game console in their home, as well as enjoying an online gaming experience through the cloud.

In terms of autonomous driving technology, which is of widespread concern, VISION-S plans to carry the L2+ advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) for open roads.

40 sensors are installed around the body, including CMOS image sensors and lidar sensors. The VISION-S system hopes to be able to combine the car audio system with the human-machine interface system to achieve intuitive driving interaction, so that the driver can accurately judge the surrounding environment from the car, such as whether there are emergency vehicles around. The model is also currently undergoing functional verification tests in Europe.

In the eyes of the outside world, this will be another important development of Sony after the ace business such as cameras and games.
