When the People's Liberation Army besieged Cheng Jiatun, Cheng Zhiwu, with the familiar terrain, waded through the mountains and waters to sneak out of the encirclement circle, hid in Tibet in the depths of the mountains, and repeatedly escaped the search and suppression of the bandit troops.
On April 7, 1951, some people reported the discovery of Cheng Zhiwu's traces in Longmen Township, Lushan County. After hearing the news, the Lushan County Guard Battalion immediately organized the military and civilians to search the mountain day and night.
On April 22, Cheng Zhiwu, who was half starving to death, went to the home of Wang Kaitai, a villager in Wangjiagou, Longmen Township, to beg for food. Wang Kaitai pretended to be enthusiastic and asked his wife to steam a pot of white-noodle steamed buns for him. While Cheng Zhiwu was devouring, Wang Kaitai quietly sneaked out of his house and reported to the district office.
The district office immediately gathered 6 members of the district squadron to arrest them. When he arrived at Wang Kaitai's house, Cheng Zhiwu was still eating steamed buns. Two members of the team pounced on him, one holding him deadly, and one of them dropping the pistol in his waist.

Cheng Zhiwu grabbed the steamed bun and continued to stuff it into his mouth, eating and eating, when he suddenly lay on the table and did not move. A team member hurried forward to check and found that Cheng Zhiwu was actually dead. According to the analysis, Cheng Zhiwu was hungry for a long time and died of overeating and frightening.
