This three-colored phoenix-headed pot appreciated in this article is in the collection of the Palace Museum.

Sancai phoenix head pot, Tang, height 33 cm, caliber 5.7 cm, bottom diameter 10.4 cm.

The mouth of the pot is crest-shaped, with a thin neck, a flat round abdomen, a high foot outstretch, and a flat bottom. Glaze such as green, brown and white is applied throughout, and the bottom foot is unglazed. Crank on one side. The abdomen forms a two-sided open light body, using plastic decoration techniques, one side for the figure riding archery diagram, the other side for the flying phoenix diagram.

The shape of this pot is ingenious, and the plastic technique makes the picture have a bas-relief effect, the object is clear and prominent, the lines are smooth, and the colors are bright and gorgeous, which is a good product.

The Fengshou pot became popular in the early Tang Dynasty and is a common vessel shape in Tang Sancai pottery, which, like another common double dragon handle pot in the same period, clearly has a Persian Sassanid style of utensils. This decorative technique of skillfully combining foreign culture with traditional ethnic art is an innovation in Tang Sancai's modeling.
