Born in 1923 in a small, impoverished county town in Liaoning Province, Xu Changyou saw the sins of the Japanese in his hometown at a young age. He was eager to join the army, and he hoped to use his strength to drive the Japanese out of our country and make our country better and better. But he was too young to join the army until 1947, at the age of 24, when he was honorably joined the People's Liberation Army.
In 1947, Chiang Kai-shek's troops in the northeast wanted to occupy the liberated areas, and our army had to restrain the other side, and in this way, war broke out. This was also the first time that Xu Changyou had participated in a real battle, and within a few seconds, it was possible that the yin and yang would be separated, making him feel the terrible nature of the war. Although the war was cruel, it did not shake their patriotism and stimulated their fighting spirit. In this war, our army liberated 15 cities and annihilated more than 70,000 people, which can be said to have won a big victory, Xu Changyou has finally become an excellent and standard warrior after many times of training.
It didn't take long for Xu Changyou to participate in the Liaoshen Campaign with his troops. History shows that this battle was fought very fiercely, and both the Kuomintang and the Communists suffered heavy casualties. In the Battle of Liaoshen, Xu Changyou showed his outstanding combat effectiveness, and he had repeatedly fought with the enemy in close combat and suffered many wounds on his body. Nevertheless, he continued to fight on the battlefield until he finally won the battle.

In the Battle of Yunshan, the first important battle of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea, Xu Changyou's head was injured by a shell, and if he could not be treated in time, it would be life-threatening. But Xu Changyou did not go to the hospital for treatment, he just let the medical staff make a simple bandage for himself, and then returned to the battlefield to fight the enemy again.
Fortunately, Xu Changyou's life should not be extinguished, and after the war, he quickly went to the hospital for treatment, and his injuries also improved.
In October 1952, Xu Changyou was appointed deputy squad leader of the seventh squad of a company of a certain unit of our army, and according to the instructions of his superiors, Xu Changyou needed to forcefully attack the 161 heights in the southern section of the Upper Ganling Mountains. Xu Changyou led seven squads and three groups, responsible for the task of destroying the barbed wire in the front.
He then led two soldiers in his squad to charge forward, carrying out the task of destroying the enemy's barbed wire. At that time, the enemy arranged eight barbed wire fences on the defensive line, Xu Changyou led the soldiers, and quickly cut the first two barbed wires, but when the third barbed wire was being cut, the enemy noticed something strange and swept the lights over, Xu Changyou and others were also blinded by the lights, at the same time, the American troops in the fortress also threw shells at the vicinity.
Fortunately, the enemy did not fully target it, and only one shell landed on the side of the barbed wire.
But the bad thing is that this shell hit Xu Changyou's waist, and a piece of shell skin penetrated his spine, and he was suddenly bleeding, because he had lost too much blood, and he had been unconscious many times.
But the task on his shoulders was related to the life and death of other comrades-in-arms, and also related to the direction of this battle, Xu Changyou thought

When they came to the enemy bunker with their blasting tools on their backs, they inserted the blaster into the bunker as planned.

Seeing that he was about to attract the attention of the enemy, Xu Changyou resolutely blocked the blast canister with his own body to ensure that it would blow up the enemy's bunker.
However, Xu Changyou still maintained the vigilance of the soldiers, carefully checked the surrounding area for omissions, and finally found a staircase with light, so he led his comrades to rush in and captured eight enemies alive.
When he rushed to the second bunker, Xu Changyou already felt a little overwhelmed. His waist was still bleeding. By this time, it was completely dark, flares were being fired on both sides, and the sky was full of brilliant sparks.
Taking advantage of the light, Xu Changyou aimed at the enemy bunker and accurately threw a grenade into it. After a muffled sound, all five or six enemies in the bunker were wiped out.
Watching the enemy being blown over, Xu Changyou was preparing to get up and launch a charge, but at this moment, a bullet whizzed and hit his right arm, his eyes were black, and he almost fell to the ground.
At this time, his comrades saw that he had been wounded in many places through fierce fighting, so they persuaded him to withdraw for treatment, but he thought that this was an excellent fighter, so he endured severe pain and continued to lead the remaining fighters to advance.
Xu Changyou endured the pain, clipped the explosive package under his armpit, leaned sideways, and crawled towards the bunker little by little.
Behind him, a shocking blood mark was left.
Xu Changyou struggled to get to the bunker, but he couldn't find a place to put the explosives. Enemy machine guns spewed out relentless tongues of fire, and several volunteer soldiers fell to the ground.
Xu Changyou sighed bitterly and decided to use his body to block the enemy's gun hole.
At this moment, a flare streaked across the sky, following the light, Xu Changyou found that there was a door in the low part of the bunker, and he was surprised and happy, wondering if he was blind and wrong. Xu Changyou got up with difficulty, put two packs of explosives under his arm, took advantage of the enemy's inattention to come to the vicinity of the bunker, he carefully observed the bunker, found that the enemy bunker was relatively weak, so Xu Changyou took advantage of the enemy and the volunteer army to fight and had no time to take care of him, climbed the mountain fort, installed the explosives, lit the fuse, quickly jumped into a traffic ditch, "bang", the enemy's bunker was gone, but the heavy air wave of the explosion stunned Xu Changyou. Taking advantage of the destruction of the enemy's bunker, the volunteer army launched a charge along the way, the enemy fled into the wilderness, and the volunteer army quickly seized the 161 heights and completely annihilated the enemy.
After the battle, Xu Changyou was made a first-class meritorious service and awarded the title of second-class blasting hero. The Government of the Dprk also awarded him the International Medal of the Third Degree. His photograph entered the Central Military Museum with Huang Jiguang.
When Xu Changyou woke up again, he found that he was already in the hospital in China.
It turned out that the comrades-in-arms found Xu Changyou, who was buried in the traffic ditch and dying, when cleaning up the battlefield after the war, and the soldiers dug him out and immediately sent him to the field hospital for treatment.
Shrapnel in the spine, the whole person is basically in danger. But Xu Changyou was not so delicate, with a tenacious revolutionary will to survive the test of the god of death, and returned to China to recover well during treatment.
Because he returned to China for treatment, he could not contact the troops, so he gradually lost contact with the troops. Some comrades-in-arms even thought that he had died heroically in the Battle of Shangganling, so he had become a martyr, and when he returned to China, he was now treated in Heilongjiang Hospital, and he was sent to a nursing home for recuperation until he recovered.

He returned to his hometown from the Invalides Sanatorium instead of reporting to the army, which was also an active demobilization. After that, he applied for the security staff of the Qianyang Grain Depot in Donggang City and became a fairly ordinary guard worker.
Because he did not report clearly to his superiors when he left the nursing home, some things in the army could not be confirmed. Later, everyone thought he had "sacrificed" and included his name in the martyrs' files.
In 1958, by chance, he was discovered by several old chiefs. Looking at the red-eyed masters who hugged each other, people knew that the original taciturn and low-key and kind granary guards were actually combat heroes.
Later, Xu Changyou's photograph was juxtaposed with Qiu Shaoyun and Huang Jiguang at the Central Military Museum and was called
"The Living Martyrs".
