Bank of America analyst John Murphy expects adjusted U.S. light vehicle sales to fall by about 20 percent year-on-year in December, with seasonally adjusted annualized sales (SAAR) of 12.9 million units. Murphy said the expected weak performance reflected sluggish sales due to continued supply shocks.
Murphy added that if December sales are in line with its expectations, it will mark the third consecutive month that the U.S. light vehicle SAAR will perform flat and will bring full-year 2021 sales to just under 15 million units, up just 3 percent from 14.5 million units sold in 2020.
Murphy's channel survey showed that the range of sales estimates for December was still "quite large," which he said was "not too surprising given the lack of visibility."
