Apple may cancel physical SIM cards starting next year and use only eSIM virtual cards

After successively removing the headphone jack and introducing the Magnetic Charging MagSafe accessory, Apple's iPhone may have to go one step further towards "no-jack" phones. According to Apple's news website MacRumors, Apple may try to cancel the SIM card slot on the iPhone 14 launched next year, using only virtual eSIM to achieve communication functions. MacRumors recently quoted an anonymous source as saying that Apple has negotiated with major U.S. mobile operators to propose that they prepare for eSIM-only smartphones by September 2022.

To make the transition, some U.S. carriers will begin offering iPhone 13 models without a SIM card slot in the second quarter of 2022, and users can activate the network through eSIM. However, the anonymous person provided only a document describing the timeline of the plan, but the content of the document did not mention Apple or the iPhone. eSIM, or Embedded SIM Card (Embedded-SIM), can embed a traditional SIM card directly into the device chip, rather than as a separate removable part added to the device, the user does not need to insert a physical SIM card. This will give users more flexibility in choosing a carrier plan or changing carriers at any time without unlocking the device or purchasing a new one. (Global Times; Alpha)
