Bao Ping, chief engineer of automotive plate technology of Baosteel Co., Ltd., has been involved in the localization project of FAW-Volkswagen Jetta since he first joined Baosteel in 1990. The daily "quarrel" with faw-Volkswagen comrades became his warmest and warmest memories of those years. As Bao Ping said, since the 1990s when domestic automotive steel was still monopolized by imports, FAW-Volkswagen and Baosteel jointly opened the road to tackle tough problems. In 1993, the localization project of Jetta steel plate was launched; in 1999, Baosteel co., Ltd. achieved batch stable supply of self-made parts for the inside and outside plates of Jetta models; in 2005, Baosteel co., Ltd. cooperated with FAW-Volkswagen to complete the localization of Audi A6L and Bora A5 self-made parts; in 2006, Baosteel became the first steel company in China to pass the FAW-Volkswagen product certification. With the completion of one milestone project after another, an important breakthrough in the independent supply of automotive steel has finally been realized, which has laid the foundation for the rapid development of the domestic automobile industry in the next two decades, and the two sides have maintained a long-term strategic cooperative relationship.
"With the landing of faw-Volkswagen's strategic layout of 'five places and six factories', Baosteel has ushered in more severe challenges in terms of scale, quality and technology," Bao Ping said frankly, "FAW-Volkswagen's strict requirements for supplier quality and scale management have promoted us to rapidly improve our production and manufacturing capabilities." In the early stage of faw-Volkswagen Chengdu base, FAW-Volkswagen and Baosteel co., Ltd. pioneered the "1+3N" supply model, using a window docking, multi-base to multi-factory near-local supply, with local processing center personal service, to create a set of optimal guarantee, the highest efficiency of the supply chain system.
In Bao Ping's view, the development of FAW-Volkswagen has also led to the development and capacity improvement of the entire Chinese auto parts supporting system. "World manufacturing looks at China, and Chinese manufacturing looks at cars." He further said that more than 80% of Chinese companies exporting auto parts today are FAW-Volkswagen suppliers.
The cooperation between FAW-Volkswagen and Baosteel is also a vivid example of the deep integration of party building and production and operation. Since 2015, the two sides have carried out the work of party organization co-construction every year, and have implemented 70 projects in total, realizing the co-construction of party building, and the double promotion and double improvement of production and operation.
