Our knowledge of abstract art is still very limited. Abstract art is the concentrated embodiment of the rationalist way of thinking and humanistic world outlook of Westerners, and it is also an important achievement of Western art in the era of modern industrial civilization. Abstract art and Western industrial civilization complement each other, understanding abstract art means understanding Western culture, understanding abstract art is understanding industrial civilization. The reason why there has been a boom in abstract art in China in recent years is precisely because we are in an important historical period of transformation from agricultural civilization to industrial civilization, which we call the industrialization period, which is the soil for the prosperity of Chinese abstract art.
Abstract art is the embodiment of the worldview and way of thinking of Westerners, and we know that the worldview and way of thinking of Westerners are very different from the worldviews and ways of thinking of Chinese, and even completely opposite. So we Chinese in understanding and knowing abstraction, which until now has not reached its essence, which may require a long-term process. China's real abstract art creation is still a matter after the reform and opening up, and the development time is still relatively short. If you count the works of the 50s like Zao Wou-Ki and Zhu Dequn as Chinese abstract art, it is not a long time. The problem was that they were in France at the time and had little influence on the domestic art scene at the time. More importantly, domestic ideology at the time was anti-abstract. Today, the prosperity of Abstract Art in China benefits from the great historical background of the reform and opening up environment and industrialization.
Abstract art has two functions, one is that from the main body of art, it reflects the independence and freedom of artists' creation. In fact, this is also the most important value of contemporary art: art is an enclave of freedom, which is open to all. Just like Mr. He Pengfei as an amateur painter, his works can be displayed in the Palace of National Culture, and we are still sitting here to discuss. This phenomenon is not possible in any other professional field, and every other subject area is very specialized, such as physics, mathematics, chemistry and biology are very specialized fields, and it is difficult for non-professionals to get involved in them. However, art is a free field open to all, and everyone is equal in the art world. Some people say that abstract art is the field with the highest spirit and the lowest threshold, which just shows that abstract art embodies the spirit of freedom.
Second, from the perspective of art ontology, abstract art is the revelation of the inner nature of the world and life. My definition of abstract art is the art of revealing the nature of the universe and life in the age of industrial civilization using a visual language that conforms to the principles of mathematics, physics, and psychology. Abstract art is divided into lyrical abstraction and geometric abstraction, lyrical abstraction is also called hot abstraction, geometric abstraction is also called cold abstraction, lyrical abstraction finally evolved abstract expressionism. Abstract Expressionism is a triad of art that emerged after Expressionism, Abstractism and Surrealism, its surface form is abstract, its function is expressive, and its inner essence is the revelation of the subconscious mind world. Whether it is a very rational geometric abstraction, or lyrical or irrational abstract expressionism, abstract art is very different from the traditional Chinese freehand art. For us, it is not an easy task to correctly understand abstract art and to be able to create truly pure abstract works of art. Abstraction is not just a way of thinking, but also a worldview.
Human history is a history of unceasing exploration of the unknown. Abstract art requires not only the study of professional artists, but also the exploration of non-professional artists like He Pengfei, and we work together to promote the development and progress of Abstract Art in China.
