How powerful is food? Algeria and Morocco have recently put aside their political grievances, joining forces with Tunisia and Mauritania to apply to UNESCO for a World Heritage Site for the "North African millet rice".

On 17 December, UNESCO announced that couscous, a famous North African delicacy, was officially inscribed on the World Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
A tweet on the day on the official Social Media account of the United Nations said: "The knowledge, techniques and cooking methods related to the production and consumption of 'North African millet' have been inscribed on the World Intangible Cultural Heritage List." ”

"North African millet rice", also known as gusmi or kuskus, is a traditional North African staple food similar to millet made after crushing hard wheat grains, often cooked with meat and vegetables.
Originally invented by the indigenous berbers, it is mainly popular in Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco and Mauritania.
In 2016
Algeria's proposal to apply for the "North African millet rice" has triggered anger and protests from its old enemy Morocco.
In 2019
Tunisia and Mauritania submitted an application to UNESCO for the "North African millet rice", praising it as "a kitchen under the hall", and how to do it is delicious.
In 2020
Algeria and Morocco put aside their past grievances and successfully applied for heritage together with Tunisia and Mauritania. An Algerian chef said: "'North African rice' has become a 'messenger of peace'. ”
