Penglai Pavilion, known as the "Wonderland on Earth" since ancient times, is located on Danya Mountain, north of Penglai County, bordering the sea. The main building of Penglai Pavilion was built in the sixth year of Jiayou (1061) of the Song Dynasty, which is the place where the legendary Eight Immortals crossed the sea.
The busy Yantai Port, located in the core of the Northeast Asian International Economic Circle, across the sea from Japan and South Korea, is one of the main coastal hub ports in Chinese mainland.
As a port city, Yantai was born very late. In the eighth year of Qing Xianfeng (1858), the Second Opium War, the British forced the Qing court to sign the Treaty of Tianjin and opened Yantai as a treaty port. At this point, Yantai developed as a port city.
