Showa Electric pushes 3TB hard disk discs The mechanical hard disk will usher in the 30TB era

There are two ways to increase the capacity of a mechanical hard disk: one is to increase the number of discs, and the other is to increase the capacity (density) of the discs. At present, the maximum capacity of a single disc of a mechanical hard disk is 2.2TB, like many 20TB hard disks are stacked with 9 2.2TB discs.

Showa Electric, TDK and Toshiba HdD have jointly developed a new MECHANICAL HARD DISK DISC based on MAS-MAMR (Microwave Conversion Magnetic Recording) technology, which is expected to increase the capacity of THE HDD to 30TB.

Showa Denko, the largest manufacturer of independent hard disk discs, said that MAS-MAMR can narrow the tracks, thereby increasing storage density.

Editor's comments: At present, the largest mechanical hard disk capacity is 20TB, like Western Digital's Ultrastar DC HC560, and Seagate's Exos X20, which are all mechanical hard disk products with a capacity of 20TB. In addition, in September this year, Western Digital announced a new storage architecture OptiNAND, and said that it will launch a 50TB mechanical hard disk product based on OptiNAND in the next 5 years.

Although the products mentioned above are biased towards the enterprise level, as a storage enthusiast, the author also has more than 10 4TB to 16TB hard disks at home, with a total capacity of 100TB or so. For the author, whether it is the Above-mentioned Toshiba 30TB mechanical hard disk, or the 50TB mechanical hard disk of Western Digital, the author's more than 10 hard disks can be integrated into 2-3 blocks, which not only saves space, but also improves efficiency. In the same way, the same is true at the enterprise level.
