Scholars often talk about "side" discoloration, because the calligraphy community has always had a strong center-forward complex, and it seems that if it is not a center-forward, it is not calligraphy. Of course, this center-forward complex makes sense, but the preference for this complex makes the winger "very hurt".

In fact, the flanking is a type of center forward. The so-called center forward means that in the writing process, as long as the pen is on the paper. The center forward includes two states: forward and flanking, the front is that the pen edge basically runs in the middle of the line, and the pen edge when the flanker writes is on the side of the line. To make an image analogy, the front line is a person's frontal photo, the side front is a side photo, and it can't be said that a person's side face is not OK, right? So, the opposing side of the center is not a flank but a side front – the pen edge deviates from the paper, and the lines are completely wiped out by the pen's belly.
Second, Wang Xizhi awakened the "side posture" writing
It should be said that in artistic expression, "side" is far more important than "positive". In the history of Western art, it is common to use the "positive" to "side" as a sign of progress, such as Gombrich's so-called "Greek miracle", which refers to the ancient Greek statues from the 6th century BC to the 5th century BC, and the sculptural statues can be seen gradually "awakening" from the rigid style of the ancient front. The front side tends to look stiff and lifeless, while the side looks lively and vivid.
In the same way, calligraphy to Wang Xizhi suddenly awakened the writing of Chinese characters, and the important reason for this is that it successfully entered the side position, which can be called the "miracle of the Jin people"!
Third, the "flanking" should be written obliquely, deriving the "side pavement" and "side beam"
In a day when the pseudo-centered, or forward-forward concept, dominated calligraphy, simple flanking writing became difficult.
Lateral writing must first break the rigid dogma of vertical writing, Mr. Sha Menghai examines that when Jinren writes, it is obliquely written; then it is necessary to be able to penetrate the nib and make the nib become the pen tip, so that when the pen edge is on the side of the line, it will not leave the paper, so that the line is strong and rhymed. The lines written in this way will turn left and right, and they will be in a graceful posture.
Combining the two forms of the pen millimeter: paving millimeter and beam millimeter, it will be derived that the side edge of the millimeter - side paving and the beam milli side of the milli - side bundle. The side paving line is like the side turn image of a person with a flat body, and the side beam is the side portrait of a person with a rounded body, so the side paving line is banded no matter how it is, and the side beam line is still round like a rope. The side paving brushwork originated from Wang Xizhi, and the later Wang Xun, Ouyang Qing, Yang Ning style, etc. were the most typical, and the side beam was a major invention of Yan Zhenqing, which was later inherited by Yang Ningshi and Su Dongpo.
Due to the influence of some misconceptions, the calligraphy of the Tang Dynasty in the future was almost dominated by zhengfeng, and it was difficult for the flanker to have a place to stay. It is no wonder that Mr. Bai Shuo lamented that "the side of the momentum is more than a thousand years", and the late Tang Dynasty has dropped for a whole thousand years, ignoring the wonderful use of the flank. There are still a few people with great insight in the side shop who use it occasionally, and no one even asks about the side bundle after the eastern slope, even if it is the wise how Shaoji, although he has followed Lu Gong all his life, he has lost it, which makes people sigh three times!
