ESPN reporter Tim Mac Mahon reported that former Lone Ranger head coach Rick Carlisle wanted the Lone Ranger to select Donovan Mitchell with the No. 9 pick in 2017, but the Mavericks eventually chose Dennis Smith, and Mitchell dropped to the 13th pick to be selected by the Jazz.

Dennis Smith has been reduced to a fringe in the league, having been without the ball for the past two seasons. Mitchell is already a league All-Star guard.
