Moscow, 16 Dec (China News Service) -- The Russian Ministry of Defense announced on 16 December that the frigate "Admiral Gorshkov" of russia's northern fleet has once again successfully conducted a test firing of the "Zircon" hypersonic missile.

Russian media quoted the Russian Ministry of Defense as reporting on the same day that as part of the completion of the hypersonic missile weapon test cycle, the frigate "Admiral Gorshkov" of the Northern Fleet once again conducted a test launch of the "Zircon" hypersonic missile in the waters of the White Sea, and the missile successfully hit the target located at the Chiza range in the Arkhangelsk region. Monitoring data show that the flight of the missile meets the set parameters.

Since last year, Russia has conducted several test firings of the Zircon hypersonic missile, and the test work is in the final stages.

According to Russia's Red Star Television, the "Zircon" hypersonic missile was developed by the Russian military enterprise "Machinery Manufacturing Scientific Research and Production Consortium" and is Russia's first sea-based hypersonic cruise missile, with a flight speed of up to Mach 9 and a maximum range of 1,000 kilometers. The missile can be launched from frigates, cruisers and submarines to destroy all types of surface ships and ground targets.

At the beginning of November this year, Russian President Vladimir Putin pointed out when presiding over the meeting of the Russian Ministry of Defense and the defense industry complex enterprises that the research and development and mass production of high-tech weapons have become one of the key directions for the development of the Russian military. After completing the test task, the "zircon" will be installed in the Russian Navy next year.

TASS previously quoted sources as saying that Russia's relevant military enterprises have begun to fulfill the contract for the mass production of "Zircon" hypersonic cruise missiles for the Russian Navy. (End)
