Market research institute Counterpoint recently released a research report on mobile phone chip shipments in the third quarter of 2021. The report shows that during the quarter, global smartphone SoC shipments increased by 6% year-on-year, while 5G smartphone SoC shipments nearly tripled year-on-year.
The best performer in the mobile phone chip market is The mediatek we are familiar with, thanks to the excellent 5G SoC and 4G SoC, MediaTek's shipment share in the third quarter reached a staggering 40%; qualcomm achieved 27% market share, ranking second. In terms of growth rate, Unigroup Zhanrui has increased from 4% to 10%, with significant progress.
The report also gives a market share chart of baseband shipments, in which Qualcomm achieved a nearly double year-on-year increase, while the share belonging to "Others" has shrunk significantly. If you add up the share of the top three manufacturers in this baseband shipment, it is 96% of the market share, and the status quo of "oligopolies" is very significant.
