SEMI report: In 2021, the total sales of global semiconductor equipment exceeded $100 billion for the first time

On December 14, 2021, SEMI released the Year-End Total Semiconductor Equipment Forecast – OEMPerspective at SEMION Japan 2021, which states that OEMs are expected to reach a new high of $103 billion in total global sales of semiconductor manufacturing equipment in 2021. That's a 44.7 percent increase from the all-time record of $71 billion in 2020. The global semiconductor manufacturing equipment market is expected to expand to $114 billion in 2022.

On December 14, 2021, SEMI released its Year-End Total Semiconductor Equipment Forecast – OEM Perspective at SEMION Japan 2021, which states that OEMs' total global sales of semiconductor manufacturing equipment are expected to reach a new high of $103 billion in 2021. That's a 44.7 percent increase from the all-time record of $71 billion in 2020. The global semiconductor manufacturing equipment market is expected to expand to $114 billion in 2022.

Ajit Manocha, President and CEO of SEMI, said: "The total sales of semiconductor manufacturing equipment exceeded the $100 billion mark, reflecting the consistent and exceptional efforts of the global semiconductor industry to expand production capacity to meet strong demand. We expect continued investment in digital infrastructure and long-term trends across multiple end markets to drive healthy growth in 2022. ”

Both the front-end (wafer fabrication) and back-end (packaging and test) semiconductor devices markets are contributing to global growth. Equipment including wafer processing, in-plant equipment, and reticle equipment is expected to expand by 43.8 percent in 2021 to a new record of $88 billion and grow by 12.4 percent to approximately $99 billion in 2022. It is expected to decline slightly by 0.5% to $98.4 billion in 2023.

The Foundry and logic segments, which account for more than half of total fab equipment sales, will surge 50 percent from a year earlier to $49.3 billion in 2021, driven by demand. It is expected to continue to grow by 17% in 2022.

Strong business and consumer demand for memory and storage is driving growth in DRAM and NAND device spending. The DRAM device market is expected to soar 52% to $15.1 billion in 2021 and grow by 1% to $15.3 billion in 2022. The NAND devices market is expected to jump 24% to $19.2 billion in 2021 and grow by 8% to $20.6 billion in 2022. Spending on DRAM and NAND is expected to decline by 2% and 3%, respectively, in 2023.

The packaging equipment market grew by 33.8% in 2020 and is expected to surge 81.7% to $7 billion in 2021, driven by advanced packaging applications, and will continue to grow by 4.4% in 2022. The semiconductor test equipment market is expected to grow by 29.6% to $7.8 billion in FY 2021, continuing to grow by 4.9% in 2022, driven by demand for 5G and high-performance computing (HPC) applications.

Regionally, China, South Korea, and Taiwan are expected to be the top three regions for equipment spending in 2021. China is expected to remain in the first place in 2021, while Taiwan is expected to return to the first place in 2022 and 2023. Equipment spending is expected to grow in all regions in 2021 and 2022.
