Scientists in Singapore have discovered a new type of staphylococcus

According to Singapore's "Lianhe Zaobao" reported on the 14th, a research team from the National University Hospital of Singapore and the National Center for Infectious Diseases found a new staphylococcus and named it after Singapore.

The bacteria, called Staphylococcus singaporensis, are one of the Staphylococcus aureus. Staphylococcus aureus is a common pathogen that can cause infections that range from skin and wounds, surgical site infections to vascular infections, and even fatal.

When the research team studied Staphylococcus aureus between April and July 2019, they found 43 isolates that were different from traditional Staphylococcus aureus and performed genome-wide sequencing and genetic comparative analysis. After comprehensive biochemical testing, six of the isolates were determined to be new species. The six isolates were derived from skin and soft tissue infections, tubes placed during gallbladder removal, and test samples from the nose and skin. Unlike methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), antibiotics inhibit these isolates. (Reporter Deng Xuemei)
