In the late 1920s, the vigorous revolutionary movement in Guangdong, Hunan, Hubei and other places had become a raging trend. In December 1935, He Bingyan, who was already the commander of the Fifth Red Division, encountered the enemy at Wawutang, Yunnan. Due to the enemy's fierce firepower, the troop offensive did not make significant progress. At this time, He Bingyan came to the front, he saw that the enemy's position was defended by the mountain, the mountain was steep, and if he wanted to take the position, he must have the spirit of not being afraid of sacrifice in order to destroy the fierce enemy in front of him. If victory is not achieved in a relatively short period of time, the entire force will face a life-and-death situation.

He led the warriors to fight with the enemy with bayonets. When the battle was over, when the soldiers found He Bingyan on the position, he was unconscious, and the entire right arm was blurred with blood and flesh, and He Bingyan was immediately carried down to the battlefield for treatment. Since the sleeves and arms were connected together, the doctor cut his sleeves with great care, and what appeared in front of the doctor was that He Bingyan's entire right arm had been blurred with blood and flesh, and the whole arm was softly spread there.
It must be closed, otherwise it will be life-threatening due to sepsis infection, and the arm will not be able to be saved. Because medical equipment, including medicines, was scarce at that time, not only was there no anesthetic, but there was not even disinfectant water. The doctor only found a carpenter's saw, and could only do a simple disinfection, and he had to give He Bingyan surgery to remove his arm.
Before the operation, the doctor asked He Bingyan if he could endure this severe pain, and he knew that He Bingyan put a towel in his mouth and shouted that you should come. The whole process really can't be described in words to describe He Bingyan's bravery, and truly interprets the modern version of the story of Guan Gong scraping bone and healing poison. Faced with such a major operation, and there was no postoperative nutrition at all, He Bingyan only lay on the stretcher of the marching army for 6 days before he went into battle again. In the battles that followed in his life, He Bingyan's one-armed sword still made his big knife fight on the battlefield and became an iconic figure of our army.
