Sun Yat-sen University suspected of finding ancient tombs Archaeology teachers and students on-site investigation and mapping

New Express News Reporter Xu Wanjie reported that the reporter learned yesterday that an ancient tomb was suspected to have been found at a construction site on the south campus of Sun Yat-sen University. The site is located on the road from Wise Hall to Shaw House and is laying a sewer that is currently underway. Teachers and students of the Department of Archaeology at the School of Sociology and Anthropology of Sun Yat-sen University have rushed to the site for investigation and surveying and mapping records at the first time. Yi Xibing, president of the Guangzhou Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology, told reporters that the archaeological institute is following up the project according to procedures, and the latest progress will be reported in due course.

According to the introduction of the students interviewed at Sun Yat-sen University and the pictures of the site, the excavated area is a trench nearly one person high, and no archaeological exploration party has been formed. At present, the excavation site has been fenced off, and the staff is conducting archaeological investigation and excavation work inside. More specific information needs to be further explored and studied. As of press time, Sun Yat-sen University has not responded to this.

It is reported that as early as 1981, the Zhongda Electric Education Building excavated an ancient tomb from the Eastern Han Dynasty; in 2006, the North Campus of CUHK discovered 22 ancient tombs, including 8 Western Han Dynasty Tukeng Tombs, 3 Eastern Han Brick Chamber Tombs, 1 Three Kingdoms Period Brick Chamber Tomb, and 10 Jin Southern Dynasty Brick Chamber Tombs. It is reported that whether it is the tomb itself or the nearly 300 pieces (sets) of strangely shaped artifacts and cultural relics excavated, it is rare in guangzhou.

In January 2019, when the South Campus of CUHK excavated 13 tombs and 1 well during the construction of the Songtaoyuan Canteen in the East District, including 1 Eastern Han Tomb, 2 Ming Dynasty Tombs, 10 Qing Dynasty Tombs, and 1 Qing Dynasty Well. Song Zhonglei, the person in charge of the excavation project, pointed out in an interview: "Judging from the current archaeological discoveries and geographical research results, the Haizhu Area of the Han Dynasty is not a large island now, but a small island centered on the highlands of Baogang, Xiaogang, Chigang and Magangding. Archaeological discoveries of Eastern Han Tombs, the owner of which may have been a resident of these small islands during his lifetime. ”
