How chaotic is Wuhu Chaohua?

The influence of Wuhu Chaohua on future generations

In China's history, wuhu chaos can be called the longest large-scale turmoil. This turmoil began in the first year of the reign of Emperor Hui of the Western Jin Dynasty (304 A.D.), when Li Te, the leader of the Hui clan, established the Chenghan court and declared the beginning of the anti-Jin rebellion, and ended in the first year of the Southern Dynasty Liu Song Yongjia (439 CE), when Northern Wei unified the north. It lasted 135 years, and the time span far exceeded the wars at the end of the Eastern Han Dynasty and the wars of the five dynasties and ten kingdoms later.

How chaotic is Wuhu Chaohua?

In the era of the Wuhu Chaohua, the north and south of China were in a completely different world - the Eastern Jin Dynasty was in a state of cultural prosperity and development, and a series of cultural celebrities such as the talented woman Xie Daoyun and the calligrapher Wang Xianzhi's father and son appeared, which had a far-reaching impact on future generations, while the north at that time was in a state of chaos, so that cultural construction was lackluster.

Dazzling wuhuhua

The first fire of Wuhu Chaohua was not burned in the north, but in Shudi.

After emperor Hui of the Western Jin Dynasty ascended the throne, he was limited by his IQ level and was unable to effectively manage the empire, which led to infighting between foreign relatives and clans in order to compete for power, which eventually led to large-scale wars between clans. This war also caused the people of all ethnic groups in the Western Jin Dynasty to be in a state of displeasure. In the end, a civil resistance movement with the dual nature of anti-national oppression and the uprising of displaced people broke out, kicking off the prelude to the Wuhu Chaohua.

Therefore, in the first year of Yongxing, first in Shudi, li te, the leader of the Hu clan, was in Chengdu, divided the Shu land and established the Chenghan Dynasty, and in the same year, liu Yuan, the xiongnu leader in the north, also established the Han Zhao Dynasty in the north to confront the Western Jin court. For a time, there were three regimes in the land of China at the same time.

Shortly thereafter, Former Zhao destroyed the Western Jin Dynasty, successively capturing the two emperors of The Jin Dynasty, Emperor Huai of Jin and Emperor Huan of Jin, and the Western Jin Dynasty perished. The Western Jin Dynasty then established the Eastern Jin Dynasty in Jiangdong to continue the rule of the Jin Dynasty, and the subsequent Northern China began to become the main stage of war.

Shortly after former Zhao's demise in the Western Jin Dynasty, the Former Zhao warlord shi le established the Later Zhao Dynasty and destroyed former Zhao, and basically unified northern China except for the Hexi Corridor. After Shi Le's death, the Later Zhao regime fell into the hands of Shi Hu. Shi Hu was brutal and carried out many purges in the imperial court, depleting Hou Zhao's strength. After Shi Hu's death, Later Zhao fell into a state of war, and Shi Hu's adopted grandson Shi Min took the opportunity to establish the Ran Wei regime, and the remaining forces of Later Zhao began to merge.

At the same time, the Xianbei people in the northeast took advantage of the war in the Central Plains to enter the Central Plains and established the Former Yan Dynasty, which began to wage war against the remnants of Later Zhao and Ran Wei. At the same time, Fu Jian, a member of the Hu clan, established the Former Qin Dynasty in Chang'an.

Soon after the establishment of Former Qin, Former Yan destroyed Ran Wei, and for a time, the north was in a situation where the three kingdoms of Former Liang (which had been dividing the Hexi Corridor since the fall of the Western Jin Dynasty), Former Yan, and Former Qin were in a juxtaposition. Before and after this, the Eastern Jin Dynasty also had several Northern Expeditions, but most of them returned without success.

After several years of hard work, Former Qin destroyed the regimes of Former Liang, Former Yan, and Daiguo (founded by the Xianbei people) and unified the north—this was the first time since the Wuhu Chaohua that the north was unified. After unifying the north, the Former Qin emperor Jian Jian planned to conquer the Eastern Jin Dynasty in the south, but unexpectedly, after the Battle of Shuishui, Former Qin fell into a state of collapse and split into several countries. Among these countries, the more well-known ones are Later Qin (also known as Yao Qin, founded by the Qiang people), Later Yan, Dai Guo (later Northern Wei), in addition, there are Helian Xia, Northern Liang and other regimes.

These regimes fought in the north for many years, and this period of time can be called the period of the Most Turbulent Period in the North during the Wuhu Chaohua Era.

The end of the five nonsense

Just a few years after the collapse of Former Qin, in the Southern Eastern Jin Dynasty, a heroic figure was born - he was Liu Yu, the founding emperor of the Later Liu Song Dynasty.

After Liu Yu seized power in the Eastern Jin Dynasty, he launched many crusades against the northern states, successively destroying the regimes of Yao Qin and Southern Yan (a continuation of Later Yan).

At the same time, the Northern Wei dynasty also gradually eliminated the rest of the northern regimes, and finally, in the first year of Liu Song Yongjia, northern China once again completed its unification, and the wuhu chaohua that lasted for more than a century came to an end, and the era of confrontation between the sixteen kingdoms of the Eastern Jin Dynasty was completely over. China entered the era of the Southern and Northern Dynasties.
