Camera module manufacturer Coasia plans to apply OIS optical image stabilization

IT Home December 13 news, according to foreign media TheElec news, camera module manufacturer Coasia Is considering the OIS optical image stabilization technology into the manufacture of camera modules. Founded in 1997, the manufacturer has been one of Samsung's exclusive partners. If the company can mass-produce OIS-enabled camera modules, it is expected that Samsung's mid-range machines will receive optical image stabilization in the future.

Sources said Coasia already has a production line that can produce OIS actuators. This technology is currently mostly equipped by flagship mobile phones, which can use the data of the gyroscope to actively deflect the mobile phone lens to achieve stabilization function.

According to foreign media, the current cost of camera modules for mid-range smartphones is about 10 US dollars (about 63.8 yuan), of which the cost of image sensors and lenses accounts for about 70%, and the cost of OIS optical image stabilization / autofocus components accounts for about 20%. The OIS capabilities of mobile phone cameras are often integrated with autofocus components and are not independent of each other. To introduce OIS functionality to mobile phone camera modules, the cost of this module is more than 15% higher than that of a simple autofocus module.

IT Home understands that Haesung Optics and Jaeyoung Solutec are also expanding their OIS business. Jaeyoung Solutec, a tier 2 supplier to Samsung, announced its entry into the OIS camera module market in September 2021 and has invested KRW 23 billion (about RMB 124 million) in research and development to date. The company supplied modules to Samsung in the fourth quarter.

This year, a number of camera module manufacturers announced the development of OIS optical image stabilization technology, and many mid-range smartphones launched in 2022 are expected to apply OIS on the main camera to benefit consumers.
