In October 1937, Mao Daijun was appointed as the deputy colonel of the 33rd Regiment of the Ninth Preparatory Division, and went to the front line of the Battle of Songhu to fight fiercely with the Japanese army. In December of the same year, he was promoted to colonel of the 35th Regiment of the Ninth Reserve Division for his bravery in battle.

In 1938, Mao Daijun led the 35th Regiment to participate in the Defense of Wuhan, and held positions west of Lushan, Songjiashan, Kongjiaci, and Menjiaqiao on the Jiujiang Front in Jiangxi to block the Japanese army. On September 2, the Japanese army, supported by aircraft artillery, launched a fierce attack on the Songjiashan position defended by Mao Daijun, but it could not be attacked for a long time, and the Japanese army was embarrassed and angry and cast poison gas, and the 35th Regiment suffered heavy casualties. The Japanese army took advantage of the onslaught, Mao Daijun unfortunately was hit several times, and before dying, he brandished a pistol and shouted: "Kill! kill! kill! Long live the Chinese nation!", at the time of his sacrifice, he was only 36 years old. The Nationalist government posthumously awarded him major general of the army.
