We can't joke about other people's lives

Feng Guochuan: In fact, I don't watch "Dream of Transforming Home" much, because of the controversy, I specifically watched this episode of the show.

Before discussing this episode, I would like to talk about a variety show that has been broadcast in Japan since 2002, "Almighty Transformation King", which can be said to be the originator of this type of program.

The house transformed in "Almighty Transformation King" really does not make people feel bright in many cases, such as the transformation of indoor space, which does not look too beautiful and amazing. But if you listen to the architects or interior designers on the show talk about why they do this, you'll find that they think very carefully.

The basic values and tone of "Almighty Transformation King" are to think about what problems are in the owner's life, and as a designer, how to use the profession to help solve these problems.

"The Almighty Residential Renovation King"

But to be honest, as far as the content of "Dream Renovation Home" I saw is concerned, I think that in the final presentation, more space is spent on whether a cool building has been built or renovated into a very powerful indoor space than in solving the owner's problem.

The cost of these buildings is indeed not low, and they also use a lot of superb architectural space skills and modeling skills, but they seem to have become an architect's "show". It is more about the pursuit of architectural effects, rather than using professional architectural knowledge to solve the problems of an ordinary person's life. This is the difference in values presented by "Dream Reformer" and "Almighty Transformation King".

Look at the ideal: after watching some "Almighty Transformation King", I was more impressed that each episode of the show spends a lot of time to describe various life scenes, the composition of family members, and everyone's living habits and physical conditions. For example, set the shortest moving line for the elderly with inconvenient legs and feet; install a fence to prevent children from touching the knife.

If you think about it, it does focus more on how to design according to the needs of the occupants, and rarely the kind of shocking design that can be visually hit. There are also many people on the Internet to share, in the decoration of the reference to the "Almighty Transformation King" in the details of home design ideas, very practical.

I don't know if it is because of the setting of the "Dream Home" program, from the perspective of private viewing experience, it likes to create a particularly strong contrast between before and after. Some reviews also said that the show did not involve the owner in the intermediate design process. If you look at it this way, it may still bring some problems.

Feng Guochuan: So this is a big question, who is this show considering? I think the healthier values of this kind of show should be said, we are to help others.

We can't joke about other people's lives, after all, the show is a short broadcast, and everyone has forgotten about it in ten years. But don't say ten years, in twenty years this house may still be used by this family.

Of course, when the concept of the architect and the owner is inconsistent, it is true that they should not simply listen to the owner, but should do some necessary and reasonable communication, and may even be very laborious communication.

For example, if a person says I want to live in a palace, and the architect says yes, let's have a good chat. The last dismantling found that living in the palace is actually a very uncomfortable thing, in addition, the cost of living in the palace is very low. Most importantly, living in a palace may be the result of one's own vanity, not a real need. At the end of the day, this person may slowly feel that I really don't really want to live in a palace, and finally discuss what kind of house I want to live in.

At this time, the architect cannot simply say "yours is not right, follow my coming". What architects should do is to disassemble these needs one by one, leave the good things in them, and slowly dissolve some of the demands that are not so far-sighted, which is a benign communication mechanism between architects and owners.

But from the perspective of this show, I don't know how the other issues are, and the one I watched seems to rarely show (these contents) from this aspect. Tao Lei has not communicated with the owner, whether the communication is effective or not, whether he is really obstinate, and the program has not been shown. All we see are compressed, edited program scenes.

In these scenes, neither seeing many shots of them reaching a consensus, nor seeing how much Dissatisfaction Uncle Du has with the design. So, it may be that he is more satisfied, or it may be that his dissatisfaction has been cut out, or he is embarrassed to say it. This is all speculation, and it is difficult to make a direct conclusion.

Moreover, the tendency of the content of the program is not too much discussion about the details of real life and problem solving.

There are even many strange questions in the show that are not explained. For example, the criticized wall of the bathroom made of red bricks, indeed, red bricks are very absorbent and difficult to manage every day. Judging from the content presented in the program, the architect made the red brick bathroom in order to pursue aesthetic and material consistency.

But from the actual use of the effect, the bathroom may not be as it seems. The program screen has seen the bathroom made of waterproof layer during construction. In the rest of the red brick wall in the indoor living space, we also saw the construction of the insulation layer, and the extruded foam board that was also stacked in the picture should be used for building insulation.

Therefore, although they are all red brick walls, the actual functions of these walls are not as simple and consistent as visually seen, and the brick wall structure has been designed to change a lot according to the different functions.

But then again, is it necessary to pursue visual consistency so strictly? Since the brick wall actually functions differently in different structural parts, can the bathroom be treated with a better-kept interior surface? A little more, the design of the dining room and kitchen is also too small compared to the rural lifestyle we are familiar with.

Exactly what the architect's design logic is, whether it is necessary to do so, why he insists on using red brick bathrooms, these are not explained in the show.

Look at the ideal: Indeed, these questions are all questions about what real life will have. How to take care of the bathroom? How is the insulation layer handled? It is a personal experience that actually lives, and it is no wonder that everyone will have such a strong reaction and complaint.

The show didn't do much positive presentation either. Many of the treatment methods rely on our inference from the details of the picture that are not explained. For example, "the outer wall with all the air leakage is holes" is actually not very accurate, because in terms of the program, it is actually still done with windproof and thermal insulation treatment.

Feng Guochuan: And I think it is very strange that the statement issued by the program team did not respond to these details that everyone really cares about. On the other hand, in the discussion of the current network environment, I think there are also many one-sided, even irrational attacks, and a lot of rough inferences have become direct conclusions.
