Moral values in the "Nuremberg Trials"

At the time of the trial of German war criminals in Nuremberg, the question was raised as to whether military leaders should be held accountable for carrying out the orders of political leaders to kill people. The trial results showed that the judges held that in the face of apparent murder and barbaric crimes, those military leaders who carried out orders must submit to a higher moral obligation, and that orders from their superiors could not be used as a ground for exempting the accused from liability.

From the above case, we can not only see that morality is a higher value standard for people to judge good and evil, justice and injustice, but also that morality plays a very huge role in people's hearts.

What is morality? Morality is a form of social adjustment, it is the criterion for evaluating whether people's thoughts and actions are good or evil, including justice and injustice, glory and shame, etc., it relies on social opinion, social customs and people's inner beliefs to ensure implementation. This form of morality is ultimately determined by economic relations.

Regarding morality, the ancient sayings in our country are: "If you see good, you will move, and if you have it, you will change", "If people are ashamed, they can do nothing", and Zeng Zi said: "I am in three provinces and my body." Not loyal to others? Friends and not convinced? Can't get used to it? "Man has no faith, he does not know what he can do", "Do not do to others what he has not wanted", "The old man, and the old man, the young man, and the young man", and so on.

The morality of modern society, for example, in daily life, we must follow good customs; in family relations, we must respect the old and love the young; for example, in economic activities, we must be honest and trustworthy, and so on.

In China's laws, we can also see the value of morality in maintaining social order, for example: China's laws stipulate that civil subjects engaged in civil activities should follow the principle of good faith, uphold honesty, and abide by their commitments. For another example, civil entities engaging in civil activities must not violate the law or violate public order and good customs. In practice, for example, in economic activities, both parties should follow the principle of good faith, abide by their commitments, and fulfill their obligations under the contract.

In short, morality is a form of social adjustment, a value criterion for people to judge and deal with problems, which not only involves the problems of the private sphere of the individual, but also guides the words and deeds of the individual; it is also the criterion for the public to evaluate whether the individual is good or evil, it exists in people's hearts, relying on social opinion, social customs and people's inner beliefs to ensure implementation. The value of morality also lies in the fact that it is also an inseparable topic for legal research.
