In 1916, when Hu Shi and Zhao Yuanren were studying in the United States, Zhao Yuanren suffered from appendicitis and had to be treated with a belly cut. Hu wrote a poem to Zhao:
Hearing that "sir" was sick made me frightened.
"Apendysettis" (Appendicitis),
