Chen Jiageng's Centennial Xiamen Dream: Why Xiamen University? To save the country! What to do? Pour me all! JiaGeng's dream of the south is strong enough to be the greatest university of perfection

author:Xiamen Story Island

"There is nothing difficult in the world, only in the ear of perseverance and responsibility."

——Chen Jiageng

During the Qingming Dynasty, Xiamen people will always remember a sage -

Mr. Chen Jiageng.

Chen Jiageng's Centennial Xiamen Dream: Why Xiamen University? To save the country! What to do? Pour me all! JiaGeng's dream of the south is strong enough to be the greatest university of perfection

On April 6th, Xiamen University, where he had devoted his life, ushered in the 98th anniversary of the school.

This is the count of the opening ceremony.

But most people don't know that he has been running for a long time to prepare for Xiamen University.

If you count it, this year is exactly,

The 100th anniversary of the glorious dream of "The Power of the South".

Chen Jiageng's Centennial Xiamen Dream: Why Xiamen University? To save the country! What to do? Pour me all! JiaGeng's dream of the south is strong enough to be the greatest university of perfection

Jiageng's Dream

On August 7, 1919, Xiamen University, which was in the process of being organized, appeared in the "Declaration".

On this day, the "Declaration" released two news in one go: "There will be private universities in the south" and "Xiamen will set up universities", and in a tone full of praise and expectations, it reported chen Jiageng's preparation for Xiamen University:

"So that the south has the highest institution of learning run by China itself." Diligently studying, thinking that the country has a century-old plan to tree people, and is the star of the education circle. ”

This year, he has been running in many ways for this matter.

In May 1919, he invited his brother Tan Jingxian to Singapore to preside over business, and he was ready to "live in Sangzi for a long time, devote himself to running a school, and no longer worry about business in the south." ”

At the farewell party, he stated his wishes:

After this thought for a long time, after that, the profits I have received year by year in my physiology (that is, "business") and industry, in addition to the bonus, I have left a part to add to the capital, and the rest of the income, although up to millions of yuan, is also sent to the motherland to cover the cost of education, which is Yu's great wish. ”

In 1874, Chen Jiageng was born in Jimei to an overseas Chinese family. At the age of 9, he entered the Shumeisha Nanxuan Private School. At the age of 14, he read the Notes on the Four Books. At the age of 16, he was called by his father to Nanyang, and from then on embarked on the road of business and education.

In 1910, Tan Kah Kee was elected as the associate of the 6th Committee of the Singapore Chinese Chamber of Commerce and became one of the overseas Chinese leaders of Fujian nationality.

At that time, Sun Yat-sen and other revolutionaries were based in Singapore. Affected by it, the national consciousness was high, and while actively supporting the revolution, they also actively promoted Chinese education.

Chen Jiageng's Centennial Xiamen Dream: Why Xiamen University? To save the country! What to do? Pour me all! JiaGeng's dream of the south is strong enough to be the greatest university of perfection

In Singapore, Mr. Tan Called on overseas Chinese to support the motherland's resistance against Japan

In 1910, Tan joined the Singapore branch of the League. It was also then that he came up with the idea of establishing a university.

Later, in an interview with sociologist Chen Da, he recalled such an incident: At the end of the Qing Dynasty, a group of their fellow villagers co-founded a primary school in Singapore, and when they arrived at the school site, funds and students, they all had a foothold, but they could not start school because there was no teacher - because the township generally had less education, only two people could be teachers, but these two people could not be hired because of things. This, he thinks, stimulates him a lot:

"I said to myself, 'This is an extraordinaryly tragic situation!' ...... This was my earliest motivation for paying attention to schooling. Education has a very deep meaning, and I am a person who believes in 'education to save the country'. ”

When Chen Jiageng embarked on the road of xingxue, he put forward the theory of "learning war" in addition to the "business war" theory that arose in the late Qing Dynasty, and believed that the latter (today's so-called innovation ability) was the fundamental. He said:

"What is fundamental? Science is also. Today's world, the world of science is also the world of its heyday. The development of science takes place in specialized universities. If there is a special university, the talents of industry, education and politics will be able to emerge. ”

The day Chen Jiageng returned to Xiamen coincided with the high tide of the May Fourth Movement. The cry for salvation and the young people's desire for Mr. De and Mr. Sai made his desire to learn even more urgent.

He issued the "Circular on The Preparation of higher normal schools attached to Xiamen University in Fujian Province", which clarified the purpose of running the school:

"The accumulated evils of autocracy have not been eliminated, the construction of the republic has not been prepared, the education of the people has not been understood, and the local industry has not been developed. These four desire each of them to be perfected, and without the expertise of higher education, they are not enough to reach it..."

On July 13, at the special meeting of the Chen Clan Ancestral Hall in Fuyu, Chen Jiageng officially announced the establishment of Xiamen University. He lamented the shortcomings of the times and called out to "the strong south":

"Today the state is in danger, and those who depend on it are only the education of this party and the hearts and ears of the undead. If there is no such thing, it is the way to cause the country to be outside the degree and destroy itself! Husband public welfare obligations, do not wait for the rich and then go... With forty million people, there is no reason to be willing to live under the people. ”

Mr. Chen Jiageng officially announced the establishment of Xiamen University at the Fuyu Chen Ancestral Hall

In the history of modern education in China, like Cai Yuanpei's "Speech on becoming the President of Peking University", this is destined to be an eternally shining speech.

Cai Yuanpei has renewed the old Peking University and opened up a new tradition of "freedom of thought and inclusiveness", while Chen Jiageng has brought the modern civic spirit born in this ancient country to the extreme by founding Xiamen University.

The strength of the South

On June 26, 1919, Huang Yanpei, a celebrity and educator in Shanghai, came to Xiamen, and before he could settle down, he received an invitation from Chen Jiageng to visit the site of Xiamen University.

Two years ago, the two met in Singapore and saw each other on the basis of a shared passion for education.

At the beginning of 1919, Huang Yanpei went to Singapore again, and Chen Jiageng told him of his plan to establish Xiamen University, and then agreed to jointly organize the establishment of Xiamen University after both of them returned to China.

Regarding this meeting in Xiamen, Huang Yanpei wrote:

"Jun Urgently needed to guide the performance of Wu Tingdi, and said in a word: 'I return from Nanyang, and I come to see it at seven o'clock in the morning and eight o'clock in the morning.' This morning at seven o'clock in the morning, it is also urgent to guide the king at eight o'clock, knowing that the king will be anxious for my urgency, and he will also be happy with my happiness. ’”

Huang Yanpei also wrote that Chen Jiageng excitedly took him on a tour and explained why he chose this place:

"The area around Yanwuting has fresh air, convenient transportation, thousands of acres of land, and is ready for future expansion... The back mountain faces the sea, and the South Taiwu Peak is across the sea as a screen. Its east waves are vast and white, and it is estimated that the north-south travel of the ship (merchant ship) will take this road. Three years later, those who crossed the Fujian Sea, looked up and down the slopes of the mountains, the towering of the buildings, the sound of strings and songs, and the tide of the sea answered..."

Subsequently, at the special conference for the preparation of Xiamen University, Chen Jiageng pledged to donate one million yuan in the start-up fee of Xiamen University on the spot, which was paid in full that year. The recurrent fee is three million yuan, which is delivered in twelve years.

The total of the two was four million yuan, which was equivalent to all of Chen Jiageng's assets at that time.

Chen Jiageng's Centennial Xiamen Dream: Why Xiamen University? To save the country! What to do? Pour me all! JiaGeng's dream of the south is strong enough to be the greatest university of perfection

Chen Jiageng, Lin Wenqing, and others inspected Xiamen University when it was first established

Before that, Huang Yanpei had never seen anyone run a school with such great enthusiasm.

He wrote that Chen Jiageng's move could be described as "destroying the family and rejuvenating learning." He also wrote that depending on the purpose of running the school, it can be seen that Chen Jiageng is also an outstanding educator -

"The scattering of wealth by the king is not for the sake of fame, not for emotion, and Gai Zhuoran has a purpose."

So, where is the source of the "Jiageng Spirit"?

In this regard, Huang Yanpei wrote that Chen Jiageng was very self-respecting and thin-

"I travel to the beautiful countryside, look at chen jun's residence, enter and follow the shape of the dou, follow the wall and look at his face; Gaiyu is the ancestor's house, and he did not try to add a rafter or cover a tile, and so did his selflessness."

He also noticed Chen Jiageng's personality:

"The heart is strong and sharp, does not smile, the stakes are in advance, and the plan is set in Russia; it is not alarmed in the face of trouble, and the achievements are not settled; it is strict in dealing with things, but lenient in dealing with people."

He believes that seeing education as the driving force for the prosperity and strength of Europe and the United States is actually an external stimulus to the formation of the "Jiageng Spirit", and its real foundation is actually the seemingly ancient, but actually vibrant internal tradition of Minxiang. If Nanyang has shaped the modern pattern of the "Jiageng Spirit", then the land of Sangzi is the real starting point of the "Jiageng Spirit".

In this regard, Huang Yanpei sighed-

"The characteristics of the nation are in the qi!"

This "characteristic" also makes the Jiageng spirit show a distinct style - it has a new social ideal, but it is deeply rooted in the countryside; it warmly embraces Mr. De and Mr. Sai, and also cares about the homeland.

Under the external color of the times, the "Jiageng Spirit" is actually a seamless grafting of the traditional ideal of repairing Qi Zhiping to modern commercial and public welfare behaviors in the form of industrial development and education.

For example, Chen Jiageng once wrote:

"Whoever has the sincerity to serve the public good must first be close and then far away." "It is advisable to pay more attention to the mulberry sent by the tomb of the ancestors."

In terms of the scholar Yu Yingshi, this is actually a neo-Confucian spirit, which is the embodiment of "the soul of the scholar".

On March 1, 1921, Xiamen University conducted its first admission examination in Fuzhou, Xiamen, Singapore and other places. A month later, a re-examination was held in Xiamen, and 98 new students were admitted, divided into the Normal Department and the Business Department.

On April 6, because the xiamen university building had not yet been built, xiamen university temporarily borrowed Jimei School, that is, WenLou, to hold the opening ceremony.

More than 3,000 people, including American scholar Dewey and other celebrities from all walks of life and local people, who were visiting China, attended the ceremony.

Xiamen University students sing the school song composed by Zhao Yuanren:

"Self-improvement, self-improvement, learn from the sea and he Yangyang!"

Who sent the key to its hiding?

The Lu River is deep and long, and I know that there is no yang.

The strength of the South! The strength of the South! ”

In the high school song, Xiamen University, was born!

From the preparation to the opening of the school, Chen Jiageng took less than two years.

Why is he thinking so much?

After the school song, Chen Jiageng delivered a speech, specifically explaining why it is necessary to "speed up" Xiamen University. He said:

"At this time of turmoil, the country's situation is in jeopardy, how can it stay long? It is better to cultivate some young people first, and it is also possible to save the country. ”

He encouraged the students to:

"When you seek to be thick, you can't get a graduation diploma, so you pride yourself on being a great honor, and this scholar should cut the precepts."

Stop at the highest good

For a university, the selection of presidents is extremely important, especially for start-up universities, such as Cai Yuanpei to Peking University and Zhang Boling to Nankai.

However, Xiamen University encountered a storm of principal replacement when it was founded.

Chen Jiageng first hired Wang Jingwei as the principal, and at that time Wang Jingwei was extremely famous in the Kuomintang, and he did not go to Xiamen University to take up his post, that is, he resigned on the grounds that he was busy with government affairs. Later, Chen Jiageng hired Deng Cuiying as the principal, at that time Deng Cuiying was serving in the Ministry of Education of the Beiyang Government, and he resigned and returned to the north before he served as the president of Xiamen University for a long time.

In a hurry, Chan Kah Kee sent a telegram to Singapore to invite Lin Wenqing to be the president of Xiamen University.

Principal Lin Wenqing

Lin Wenqing is a Nanyang qiao (Chinese born in Nanyang). He was born in Singapore in 1869. At the age of 18, he became Singapore's first Queen's Scholarship winner and studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh, then a world-class medical centre.

After returning to Singapore, he served for a long time as a Chinese member of the Straits Colonial Legislative Council, with great prestige. He was also an industrialist, reformer, educator and leader of the Confucian revival movement in Singapore, and was known as the "Father of Rubber Cultivation" for his earliest advocacy and operation of rubber plantations in the region.

According to the singaporean folk at that time, in the whole of Singapore, only two people had the qualification of "one carriage", one was the governor and the other was Lin Wenqing.

That is to say, at that time, Lin Wenqing's social status was actually far above Chen Jiageng.

So, why did Chen Jiageng want Lin Wenqing to be the president of Xiamen University?

Because he knows very well that this is also Lin Wenqing's wish.

In the early years of the Republic of China, Chen Jiageng and Lin Wenqing once returned to Singapore from China in the same boat. On the vast sea, the two of them —

"If we discuss current politics and look at each other and lament each other, because the wisdom of the people has not been opened, the foundation of the republic will eventually be consolidated for no reason."

Soon after, when Chen Jiageng decided to study in his hometown, he consulted Lin Wenqing's opinion. Lin Wenqing believes that if "a university is founded, the contribution to the country will be great." ”

When he received Chen Jiageng's invitation, Lin Wenqing also received a telegram from Sun Yat-sen inviting him to return to China to participate in politics. He did not want to reject Sun Yat-sen directly, and called back to ask him to make a decision on his behalf. Sun Yat-sen replied that he would take charge of Xiamen University, and Lin Wenqing immediately resigned from all his positions in Singapore and rushed to Xiamen University.

On July 4, Lin Wenqing arrived in Xiamen and plunged into the affairs of Xiamen University in the early days of its founding.

Xiamen University organizational system table in the private period

The first is to formulate a school plan and school purpose, which is mainly divided into three categories: to propose the science, medicine, industry, agriculture, literature, commerce, education, art, religion, philosophy and other subjects; the school pays special attention to the spirit of student autonomy and the development of sports; on moral issues, adopts the world's most valuable concept of life, and expounds the ethical theories inherent in China, so that it can be adapted to modern human life.

In short, the purpose of Xiamen University is to integrate China's inherent culture and modern civilization and create a new culture that stands in the world's academic forest.

Taking this as a starting point, Lin Wenqing took the four words of "stop at the supreme good" in "University" as the motto of Xiamen University.

In this regard, Lin Wenqing, with his advantages, has hired foreign famous teachers such as american scholar Ryder and French scholar Dai Miwei in addition to domestic scholars.

At this time, under the auspices of Chen Jiageng, the campus buildings of Xiamen University were also completed one after another.

On May 9, 1921, Chen Jiageng and more than 100 xiamen masters and students came to the martial arts field by boat and held a groundbreaking ceremony for the xiamen university building.

Mr. Chan Kah Kee chose May 9, National Shame Day, to lay the foundation stone for the school building, teaching future generations not to forget the national shame

According to his design, the five school buildings in the early days of Xiamen University were arranged in a "one" shape on the martial arts field, leaning on the Five Old Peaks, facing across the sea from South Taiwu. The exterior wall is made of granite clear water wall, and the roof is crowned with a glazed tile roof in the Minnan style.

A creative style that blends Western, Nanyang and Minnan styles was born.

Qunxian Building

Later, Chen Congzhou, a scholar of ancient architecture and garden art, named it "Jiageng style architecture" and commented:

"Mr. Chen is not an architect, but he has made more outstanding works than architects... It has an indelible place in the history of modern architecture. ”

In February 1922, the first school building of Xiamen University was completed, and all the teachers and students of Xiamen University moved into the new school building. Subsequently, Jimei Building, Qunxian Building, Tong'an Building and Nang YingLou were also completed.

At the end of 1922, the first five school buildings of Xiamen University were completed

At this point, after more than a year of hard work, Xiamen University has entered the right track. As it is today, "tourists pass through Xiamen, and there is an endless stream of visitors to the school." Young students from all over the world continue to "petition and study" to Xiamen University.

In 1921, representatives of the fourteen provinces and autonomous regions of the National Education Association came to visit Xiamen, when the xiamen university building was still under construction. After visiting, the delegates held that the site of Xiamen University is located in "a magnificent place with a back mountain and a sea." ”

In 1933, the educationalist Wu Jiazhen came to Xiamen University to teach, and he believed that-

"The site of Xiamen University is ideal, perfect and beautiful."

The university is big

The opening day of Xiamen University is also the time when the first modern universities in China grow.

As one of the ancient civilizations, China has a long tradition of education, but because the reform in the late Qing Dynasty was too slow, so that the university in the modern sense has not been formed in China, although in the late Qing Dynasty, there were schools such as Beijing Normal University hall and Beiyang Public School, but strictly speaking, it is only the prototype of the university.

In the early years of the Republic of China, when Hu Shi was studying in the United States, his English professor Yadan inadvertently asked between classes: "Is there a university in China?" In Yadan, this is a casual question, but for Hu Shi, it is an embarrassment of "speechlessness". On the same day, greatly stimulated, he wrote in his diary:

"I can see that there is a country in China that can compare with Harvard, Cambridge (Cambridge), Oxford, Berlin (University), Paris of Law (Gaoshi), and I am blind to death. Woohoo! ”

In 1921, the year xiamen university was opened, when talking about Chinese universities, Cai Yuanpei still sighed: "The only peking university with greater strength." As for other universities, not only are they very few, but they are also "naïve enough to be imagined." ”

But years later, when it came to Chinese universities again, he had completely changed his mind.

At that time, in addition to the old Peking University, southeast university, Yenching university, Xiamen university and other emerging universities were entering the list of famous universities, at this time, Cai Yuanpei warned Peking University: "Peking University is just one of many universities, it is absolutely inappropriate... Arrogant. ”

During this period, under the presidency of Lin Wenqing, xiamen university's school affairs and school performance flourished.

On June 28, 1926, the Shanghai "Declaration" reported that Xiamen University:

"The interior is getting better and better... For massive expansion. With the approval of the School Council, seven subjects, including arts, sciences, education, commerce, law, medicine and engineering, were set up, and the Institute of Chinese Studies was added. ”

This year, due to the turbulent situation in Beijing, a large number of scholars went south.

From March to December, Lin Yutang, Shen Jianshi, Lu Xun, Zhang Xingxuan, Gu Jiegang, Zhang Yi, Shi Luguo, Bingzhi, Jiang Lifu, Hu Gangfu, Zhu Zhidi, Chen Zhanxi, Zhuang Zexuan, Xiao Chengen, Au Zhaorong, Lin Xiqian, Zheng Shicha, Chen Deheng, Chen Qilu, Lu Qizong and other famous scholars have joined Xiamen University.

Suddenly, Xiamen's famous teachers were like clouds.

Under such a lineup of teachers, xiamen university at that time taught no more than 5 students per teacher on average, and some professional courses even adopted the method of individual teaching.

Taking Lu Xun's class as an example, there were a total of 23 Xiamen university students who listened to Lu Xun's lectures at that time, including 2 female students. These students included all the students of the Department of Literature of Xiamen At that time, as well as some students of the Department of English and Education.

Some teachers and students took a group photo

Taking the Department of Zoology of Xiamen University as an example at that time, there was only one student in the whole department, "sitting opposite the faculty every day", and the lecturer was Bingzhi, a famous scholar who returned from studying in the United States and the main founder of modern Chinese biology.

Such a classroom scene is unimaginable to today's people who are accustomed to having a teacher with several students even for doctoral education.

Shiren commented:

"He can be detached and independent, and concentrate on being a researcher, and in North China there is only Nankai, and in South China, only Xiamen University."

In 1927, Hawkins, the overseas secretary of the London Society, after visiting many universities in China, wrote a special letter to Lin Wenqing, praising Xiamen University: "The excellent results ... I have never seen anyone better than your school. ”

In 1927, President Lin Wenqing took a group photo with all the teachers, including 4 foreign experts

In 1929, Sun Guiding, head of the Department of Education at Xiamen University, confidently said:

"In china at present, private universities are much more stable than national universities as long as they have sufficient funds and can handle people. Xiamen University is a prime example. ”

In 1931, the 10th anniversary of the school was celebrated

However, it was also at this time that Xiamen University suffered the most serious crisis since the establishment of the school.

At that time, a global economic crisis was sweeping across Nanyang.

At the end of 1928, the three-year total settlement of Chen Jiageng Company showed that more than half of its assets had been lost due to factors such as the decline in rubber prices. Subsequently, the company's operation became more and more difficult.

Previously, Chen Jiageng had always believed that even if he alone supported the school fee, there was no problem. He once said that when he initiated the establishment of Xiamen University, he --

"The assets of $4 million, to the age of 52, increased to $12 million, while the equipment and recurrent expenses of the two schools were eight or nine hundred thousand yuan per year, and there was no limit to self-determination."

Despite the difficulties, Chen Jiageng is still extremely persistent in running the school. At that time, he was persuaded to stop the school fee, and he replied that he was not willing to give up his obligations .

"He can stop. Once classes are suspended and closed, it is difficult to recover. ”

In 1931, Chen Jiageng's company was reorganized into a joint-stock company, which still maintained the school fees with profit commissions, but it was no longer enough to maintain the normal operation of Xiamen University.

Through The Villa, Tan Kah Kee sold one of three villas in Singapore

In this regard, Chen Jiageng also specifically explained that he hopes that the public will not think that his predicament is due to the burden of school fees:

"Since the coming of the slump, there are still more ordinary people than I am, and there is no burden like mine, but the current difficulties, which will not diminish to me... May the people of our country not cite my predicament as a pretext, hinder the development of public welfare undertakings, and trap me in sinners. ”

In 1935, in order to survive the school fee crisis, Lin Wenqing went to Singapore to collect donations for Xiamen University.

After the fundraising began, every morning at 5 o'clock, Lin Wenqing got up to make preparations, set off at 9 o'clock, knocked on the street, collected donations from overseas Chinese, until 6 p.m., after returning home, busy until one or two o'clock in the morning to rest.

Someone advised him: "You are so old, every day is so hard, tomorrow morning you should rest for half a day, and then work again in the afternoon." ”

He pointed to the other members of the fundraising group and said, "Can I be old and see if they are teenagers to rest?" ”

After returning from fundraising, Lin Wenqing reported to the teachers and students of the school: a total of more than 300,000 yuan was raised——

"The result of this southward crossing not only received a lot of and powerful help in the economic aspect, but also spread the reputation of 'Xiamen University' throughout Nanyang society."

At this time, Xiamen University continued to develop under the auspices of Lin Wenqing.

While continuing to recruit famous teachers, he also built teaching and living facilities such as animal and plant museums, waterworks, electric light factories, hospitals, and bathrooms in addition to school buildings, professors' residential buildings, and libraries.

In this regard, the Report of the Customs Decade (1922-1931) states:

"There (Xiamen University), competent faculty members lay the foundation for the great work of students in the future... Many of the students come from other provinces. Now, there is one girl in every ten college students. The campus is spacious and picturesque. ”

On February 12, 1936, the Declaration reported:

"Xiamen University is the highest institution of learning in southern Fujian, with a pure learning style, strict teaching and management, and one of the best private universities in the country."

In 1937, on the occasion of the 16th anniversary of Xiamen University, Xiamen University faculty member He Lisheng confidently wrote:

"Although our history of Xiamen University is not long, we have long been able to keep pace with famous universities in China... From the fourteenth year of the Republic of China to the present, there are twelve classes and 584 graduates, each of whom can learn from what they have learned and enthusiastically serve the country and society. ”

Among these few graduates, there are 5 who will become academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in the future, and those who become well-known experts are dozens of times higher.

In short, almost all those who enter the school can become talents

Some of the works published by Xiamen masters and students

Later, after changing to the state, Xiamen University continued this style of running the school. Take the graduates of the Department of Mathematics and Science in 1946 as an example, there are only 4 people in this class, but two academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences were born from it.

The reason is that Lin Wenqing once said:

"We are convinced that the quality of the school's performance is not directly proportional to the number of students."

This concept is similar to "the so-called university, not only the building, but also the master", which can be said to be the same.

In 1935, some people thought that Xiamen University was "backward" on the grounds that a certain university in Shanghai was late in running xiamen university, but the number of students in school had far exceeded xiamen university.

In this regard, Chen Jiageng refuted that the purpose of running a university is to cultivate talents, not to issue diplomas, and Xiamen University has always been "not out of line for affection" in enrollment and teaching, and will never only pursue the scale of running the school and imitate "the enrollment of other places is casual, or the degree of regulation is shallow." ”

In 1937, after several years of hardship, Chen Jiageng had to apply to change Xiamen University to a national university.

On June 4 of that year, the Ministry of Education of the National Government in Nanjing sent a telegram to Chen Jiageng to approve the transformation of Xiamen into a national government.

On July 26, the new principal, Saben Dong, arrived at the school. Lin Wenqing, who is nearly seventy years old, has also relieved himself of the responsibility of principal for 16 years and returned to Singapore with his family.

"National Xiamen University was founded by Chen Jiageng, Chen Jingxian and Lin Wenqing, who served as president for more than ten years, working together, dismal operation, solid achievements, and large scale. Even in the war of resistance against Japanese aggression, the violent enemy wantonly destroyed our educational and cultural institutions, and the school was actually blown up. Mr. Jiageng, in this regard, "said goodbye (not a complete farewell, and later he returned to China to settle down, and then went all out to expand the campus)" Xiamen University.
