Mr. Masadai Higashiide is a "handsome guy" who starred in the sparkling works of the original shonen manga movies, and at the same time, he played an important role in the works left in people's memories in important places of his career. ——The film "Sleep and Wake", which was shortlisted for the main competition unit of this year's Cannes International Film Festival, is currently being released. In this work, Mr. Higashiide challenged one person to play two roles for the first time. How does it feel to play the heroine Asako's former lover Maizi, and the liangping who later interacted with her, who looked exactly like Maizi?
At the beginning, I wanted to separate my inner drawers, and it was better to distinguish them from the differences in action to the roles. But a month and a half before the shooting, director Ryusuke Hamaguchi said to me, "Please don't try to differentiate between the characters." "If you use the instrument to say your own lines, it looks completely different." That is, once it is artificial, it is not a living drama. So, instead of playing two roles in one work, I played the role of Mai in one work of the Hamaguchi group and Ryohei in another work of the Hamaguchi group.
Tomoka Shibasaki, the teacher of the original work, was on the shooting scene and talked about wheat. When Shibasaki was writing "Wake Up and Sleep", he wrote a side story in which Mai's setting seemed to be aliens. Like the messenger of Taketori Monogatari, he is on a mission to take away Asako. ——Including this work, Mr. Higashiide not only starred in topic works, but also in impressive works at key moments in his career. To what extent is your will reflected in the choice of works?
I think a lot is due to lucky to get such a story. With that said, I am reminded of Keanu Reeves' documentary Yin and Yang (2012). In it, Keanu asked Christopher Nolan, "Why use film and digital separately?", to which Nolan replied, "I only use film." Digital cookies, like cheap cookies, can be eaten when they are just baked, but they can't be eaten after a long time. In fact, even for a work like Dunkirk that uses CG technology, Nolan uses film. Of course, this is just a metaphor, not that it all fits, but I also like movies, because I am engaged in this work, so I have seen a lot of works. In this way, you can look forward to the works that have been preserved as famous paintings for many years, and even if they cannot be evaluated immediately, they still want to be related to "high-quality cookies".
That being said, it's not always possible to encounter "high-quality cookies." "I think there are many ways to measure the balance of the East. Although it is impossible to measure the weight of moving, which is better or worse than a work that moves people in 100 theaters across the country, or a work that moves most people even though it is only released in 10 theaters? As an actor, I find both of these things valuable. It's hard, but if it's a masterpiece, the limits get bigger. However, effort can only be made in being given. Even actors of the same age have people who choose their own works with a unique sense of smell, which I think is very powerful.
- It's not just Mr. Higashi's business, actors are often caught just because they are attractive or handsome, and indulge in it to narrow the scope of the role. Aren't you afraid of that period?
Because I want to do it for a long time, I don't mind being tied up like that now. For example, in the previous "Journey of Youth" (2014), the audience was mainly girls, and in general, the performance of the glittering part was also the part of the unique performance form like Kabuki. But I also liked "Journey of Youth" and I was so grateful to be able to star in that work during that period.
There are also people who want to try villain roles in order to pursue the breadth of the characters. How about Mr. Higashiide?
For example, even if you play a very bad role in a war movie, it is only necessary to play it as a role like that, and I don't think it is particularly happy to play a bad role. In the past, my esteemed director Eiko Ogawa once joked: "The only geniuses who can be called the 'father of art' are Philip Seymour Hoffman or Heath Ledger." I also think it's irresponsible to chalk up anything to "artistic regrets". On the other hand, not knowing something is also bad, so a variety of experiences are necessary. But it doesn't bring the "joy of art" into private life, and it doesn't drag the characters back into the water (laughs).
——In this interview, I read about Mr. Higashiide's past report, "His voice is very distinctive, and his role is difficult depending on the work, and he uses that voice in "Confident Man JP" (2018 / Fuji TV) to make use of it, which is convincing." As an actor, how do you grasp your voice?
When I was shooting "Confident Man JP", in order to show my innocence, I put my voice to my mouth. When filming "Sleep or Wake Up", I also considered where to make a sound, using Mai Liangping and him, but it was difficult. For example, it is possible to speak as normally as it is now, or it can make a muffled sound from deep in the throat. Even if you consider whether you should cooperate with the way the drama is pronounced, once you enter the official performance, there are many cases of abandonment. I think there will also be directors who feel "Oops, Oops, East out of the east is not so demanding." Moreover, I myself feel that speaking in a made-up voice is "acting". However, different dramas have their own destinations. I think it's great to have a vocal method that fits the genre like classical art, and to be able to make it freely.
——What kind of person does Mr. Higashito think is handsome now?
When I was a child, I admired the handsome big brother on TV, but now, like I saw in the documentary, it was an adventurer and a mountaineer, and when I saw the faces of the men at the end of the curtain, I felt that their expressions could not be approached in any way. I think it's nice to have a handsome person on the surface. No matter how handsome it is considered to be in society, it is meaningless if it is considered not handsome by people close to it. People who are trusted, relied on, and given a sense of peace of mind by people close to them are handsome, and I want to be that kind of person.
