A new species has been discovered in the waters of England: a pair of dark eyes on the butt

According to the American life science website, sometimes people joke that if only the back of the head had long eyes, the viewing angle can reach 360 degrees. At present, scientists have discovered a new species of seaworm in Scottish waters, and its eyes are actually on the butt!

The small sea bug, first described in the European Journal of Taxonomy, published in June, is named "Ampharete oculicirrata" and has a pair of vesicular black eyes on its tail tentacles, a pair of compound eyes that look like a pair of eyes on its butt. In fact, this sea bug also has a pair of eyes in its mouth.

Researchers have found this seaworm when they collected seabed sand samples from the West Shetland Islands protected area in northern Scotland, which is considered an undeveloped hotspot area with biodiversity. The researchers collected more than 50 spoonfuls of sand at 120 meters below water and found more than 80 marine worm specimens, each with an average length of 4-5 mm, equivalent to the width of a No. 2 pencil eraser.

Like other polychaetes, this marine worm is a bottom-eater with a bunch of food-grabbing tentacles distributed near its mouth, which is a good illustration of its benthic habits. What about the eyes on the ass? It's not uncommon for polychaetes to have multiple pairs of eyes on their bodies, and a decentralized network of vision will help marine worms better detect predators, but marine creatures with eyes on their butts are very rare.

The representative of the United Conservation Commission of the United Kingdom noted that the strange worm found so close to the Scottish mainland is very rare and will further demonstrate the diversity of life lurking in the sandy bottom habitat of the continental shelf of the West Shetland Islands.
