Audiences who know a little about Park Chan-wook's films know that his films are full of black elements about "revenge" and "redemption".
The story has Hitchcock-esque suspense, Kitano's "violence", David Finch's "social scars" and the love and hate of small characters captured from the inferiority of the Korean native nation, so the "Revenge Trilogy" with a very personal style has established his status as a master in the Korean film industry.
Today, I want to introduce the first part of the trilogy, "I Want Revenge"
Ryu ( Shin Ha-kyun ) , who was born deaf , has been dependent on her sister since the death of her parents. Sister Nai is terminally ill and needs a kidney transplant to sustain her life. Ryu, who did not match his sister's blood type, not only lost a kidney when he was looking for a way out, but was cheated out of all the money, and later when the doctor said that he had found a kidney donor, Ryu had no money to see his sister.
At this point in the story, we see the life picture of the marginalized people in society - garbage-like work, garbage-like residence, absurd encounters, cheating the kidneys and cheating money, and even not taking the legal route. In order to raise money for her sister's medical expenses, Ryu and his girlfriend plot to kidnap Yoo-sun, the daughter of factory owner Dong-jin (Song Kanghao). Unlike ordinary kidnappings, Ryu hasn't even beaten the boss's daughter, but instead has a "friend" relationship. After Dong-jin receives his daughter's photo and the ransom request, he prepares the ransom without calling the police, but the accident suddenly comes!

When we saw Dong-jin dragging Ryu to the lake where his daughter's life was taken, he said calmly, "I know you're a good person, but you know, why I have to kill you, understand, you know?"
Unable to speak, Ryu certainly knew that when his sister died, he buried the cold corpse with his own hands; when his girlfriend died, his final farewell was only a brief "hand-holding"; after brutally killing three kidney dealers, he did not use any violence in the face of Dong-jin's revenge.
Why did Dong-jin end up being killed?
In the final scene, perhaps the most absurd place in the film, there is only one person's organization, but behind it is a group of members who have not shown their faces at all, and these people kill Dong-jin and leave calmly. Dong-jin's puzzled gaze proved everything, why do we, the good people, have to die!
