On July 7, in Qingdao Ruizi Group Co., Ltd., located in the national modern fishery seed industry demonstration farm, 1400kg of new varieties of "Ginseng No. 1" ginseng were planted out of the pond and packed and transported to three sea cucumber factory seed production bases in Qingdao West Coast New Area and Jimo District, where large-scale seedlings will be expanded for more than 4 months. This is the first batch of seedlings expanded since the implementation of the "Ginseng 'Ginseng No. 1' New Variety Breeding and Propagation Technology System Construction" project in Qingdao. Subsequently, 1400kg of new varieties of seedlings of "GinsengYou No. 1" will be transported to the corresponding expansion base, which will greatly improve the large-scale production capacity of seedlings of sea cucumber seeds in Qingdao.

As a representative species of the 5th wave of marine aquaculture in China, sea cucumber has formed a breeding industry group with Shandong, Liaoning and Hebei coastal areas as the main production areas, and extends to the coastal areas of Fujian and Zhejiang in the form of north-south relay, with an increased aquaculture area of 3 million mu, an annual output of 200,000 tons, and an output value of up to 30 billion yuan, becoming a pillar industry of the coastal fishery economy. At present, the aquaculture area of sea cucumber pond in Qingdao is 45,000 mu, and the output in 2018 is 20,000 tons, which is one of the pillar industries of aquaculture in Qingdao.

In recent years, sea cucumber farming has caused serious economic losses due to diseases, high temperatures and other problems, and it is urgent to start from germplasm to improve the resilience of seedlings to stress. After 12 years, the Yellow Sea Fisheries Research Institute of the Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences cooperated with Qingdao Ruizi Group Co., Ltd. to cultivate an excellent variety with strong disease resistance, fast growth rate and high temperature resistance, "Ginseng No. 1", which passed the review of the National Aquatic Origin and Fine Seed Committee in 2017, and is the first new variety of ginseng with stress resistance in China.

At present, the coverage rate of fine sea cucumber seeds in China is less than 20%, and it is urgent to improve the popularity of fine seeds, thereby enhancing the development momentum of the industry. In response to this phenomenon, the Qingdao Municipal Ocean Development Bureau actively fought for municipal financial funds in accordance with the requirements of the Qingdao Municipal New and Old Kinetic Energy Conversion "Marine Offensive" combat plan, and organized the implementation of the "Thorn Ginseng 'Ginseng No. 1' New Variety Breeding and Breeding Technology System Construction" project in March this year.

The project uses the core technology mastered by the R&D team to establish the "Samyou No. 1" breeding and breeding technology system in Qingdao, and strengthens the demonstration and promotion and technical personnel training, realizes the transformation and application of the results in Qingdao City, and increases the annual breeding volume, naïve ginseng cultivation and large-scale seedling production of sea cucumber seedlings by more than 1 times, reaching 30 billion, 30,000 kg and 30,000 kg respectively, effectively improving the production capacity and coverage of sea cucumber seeds in Qingdao, and promoting the healthy development of the sea cucumber industry.

In the next step, Qingdao will give full play to the advantages of all parties, accelerate the cultivation of a number of large-scale, intensive and modern fine seed production bases and seed industry enterprises, and help Qingdao build a national high-quality sea cucumber seed supply base.
