Huangyao Ancient Town is located in the lower reaches of the Li River in the northeast of Zhaoping County, Hezhou City, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. The unique karst landform in the south makes the Huangyao landscape beautiful and is known as "Little Guilin". During the Song Dynasty, because the people in this area only had the surnames of Huang and Yao, they were named "Huang Yao".
There are more than 300 ming and qing dynasty old mansions in Huangyao Ancient Town, and walking in the ancient town is like traveling through time and space. The old mansion around me, inadvertently, will be associated with a name with a loud voice. More than 70 years ago, during the beacon years of the Anti-Japanese War, Huang Yao once carried the suffering and hope of the nation, and was a shelter and rear area for many patriotic democrats, cultural figures and compatriots.
Uncle Lao, who lives in Liyu Street, has personally experienced such a past. At that time, many people came to Huangyao, and at that time, Huangyao was already full of people and overcrowded. In November 1944, Guilin fell, a large number of people were evacuated from Guilin to Huangyao, the country was in trouble, the Huangyao people put the national righteousness first, accepted and treated the compatriots who came here to take refuge. At that time, there were more than 300 households and more than 1,000 people in Huangyao, and there were more than 8,000 people evacuated to Huangyao, and at that time, Huangyao, whether it was temples, ancestral halls, schools, and houses, was full of compatriots who had taken refuge, but the Huangyao people had no complaints, and every family did their best.
At that time, Uncle Lao's family also lived in three families, one afternoon, a thin man who was paralyzed, was carried on a stretcher to Lao Qiuqiang's home, although the home was full, but Uncle Lao's parents still decided to squeeze in again and vacate a room for him to live. Uncle Lao's father vacated the room in which he lived, preferring to live in the mill of the rice mill, where the four of them lived.
At that time, Uncle Lao's family did not know that the man lying on a stretcher was Gao Shiqi, a famous Chinese bacteriologist and popular science writer. When Gao Shiqi was studying for a doctorate at the University of Chicago, in one of the experiments, he unfortunately contracted the virus and left him permanently disabled. Uncle Lao's sister helped him carry water, Uncle Lao's mother sometimes helped him cook breakfast, sometimes there were good dishes for him to eat, and what local specialties were in the New Year, they also gave him a taste, and treated him like his own family.
At that time, along with Gao Shiqi, a large number of people from cultural circles and patriotic democrats were evacuated to Huangyao, and He Xiangning, Ouyang Yuqian, Qian Jiaju, Mo Naiqun, and Zhang Xichang all lived in Huangyao. Ouyang Yuqian was a famous Chinese theater artist, then the director of the Guangxi Art Museum, and together with the Peking Opera master Mei Lanfang, known as "North Mei Nanou", the Guangxi Art Museum he led also moved into the Wu Family Ancestral Hall in Huangyao Town during that period. Although the conditions were extremely difficult, these cultural circles and patriotic democrats still cared about the country and the nation and actively publicized the Anti-Japanese Salvation Movement.
On New Year's Day 1945, on huang yao's ancient opera stage, Ouyang Yuqian led the members of the Guangxi Art Museum to hold a New Year's Day party, performing many anti-war programs such as "Singer Under the Iron Hoof", "Lugou Bridge Q&A" and "Put Down Your Whip". These plays are very infectious, the people's response is also very warm, everyone is also deeply encouraged and infected, and then shout slogans, saying 'the war of resistance will be victorious'! Say 'Down with Japanese imperialism'! This evening party gave our Huangyao masses a very deep patriotic education, and then it also stimulated everyone's enthusiasm for the War of Resistance and confidence in victory, and in the future, many of our huangyao masses embarked on the revolutionary road in this way.
When Ouyang Yuqian, Qian jiaju and others learned that the huangyao masses had a strong desire to open a middle school, they immediately set up a preparatory committee and founded the first middle school and the first library for Huang Yao.
In August 1945, the Anti-Japanese War won the final victory, and the refugees who had survived the difficulties also left Huangyao one after another. On the occasion of parting, Gao Shiqi left an affectionate little poem for the ancient town of Huangyao, "Farewell, Huang Yao", in which he compared Huang Yao to his "nanny in asylum", "friend in trouble" and "lover in a chaotic world". Huangyao Town resident Lao Qiuqiang: "Don't say we don't like the small grass house, in your warm arms, dripping tears of the evacuated people', many people were moved, seeing our home, he himself is also very moved, seeing our family to take care of him." 'Now that the war is victorious, we have to go back, goodbye, our nanny when we took refuge'. More than 30 years ago, I saw his poems and published them in Guangxi Daily, and I knew his identity. We are all victims, we are poor peasants, and we should all take care of each other. ”
The Huangyao people selflessly accepted nearly 10,000 compatriots who were killed, providing them with a warm shelter in the war, and those who received help brought progressive ideas and advanced culture to the people of Guzhen, leaving a valuable spiritual wealth for the local area.
